Don't get me wrong--I'm enjoying this run as much as anyone and I get this is probably the only trophy this team has a realistic shot at this year. But as the Tigers prepare for their sixth game in six days, and ninth in the last eleven, is it worth asking the question if this is too much wear and tear on a team? With the Bain injury and the innings piling up on the pitching staff, with the potential for a couple of guys going on short rest next week, is the smart move to "throw" a few games, as the top teams in the Big XII apparently did, in order to get ready for the NC$$ Tournament?
Coaches Aren't Prioritizing Big 12 Tournament
I understand LSU was in the bubble coming in, but at what point have you done enough? Does the conference tournament format need adjusting to prevent teams from burning themselves out?

Lol you think this team can turn it on and off?? Hardly any team or player can do that. You need a player like LeBron James or tom Brady. Any momentum we have needs to be harnessed and ridden ya moran. If we tried to throw a game we would probably win anyway.

For the record, I think the answer is "No." Big-leaguers play 162 games in 180 days and CPM does a good job of spreading out the pitching load (see below) while still getting his team warmed up for the post-season. But it's interesting that he's getting to be the exception and coaches who are already in seem to think the smart move is to shut their teams down and "rest." Will be interesting to see how this plays out next weekend. (And, again, for the record, I think it will work out in LSU's favor)

LSU Pitching, SEC Tournament:

(Appearances-Innings-Pitches)
Hess-2-10-148
Peterson-2-7-105
Hilliard-1-5-97
Beck-1-4-85
Sanders-2-5-83
Bush-2-5-82
Bain-2-3-47
Gilbert-1-3-42
Fontenot-2-2-24

Yep! The guy making 3/4 of a million dollars to coach his team to win it all and compete could not possibly know as much as you!

A coach from the big 12 ain't winning a NC either. Why would you cite a conference that sucks at baseball?

To point at them and laugh?
Maybe the SEC marketing office is right and "it just means more" to win in Hoover!

This team is playing better right now than they have all year , our pitching staff has looked better this week than they have all season and it shows in their confidence on the mound !! We have seen teams get hot this time of the year and make a deep run in the NC race , you can’t just pull the plug and tell them we will save it till the regionals, and besides as Herm Edwards once said “ YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME “

What changes would you make to keep it from being "too much wear and tear on a team"?

Keep in mind the SEC makes a ton of money off of the tournament, not just from ticket sales but also from the ESPN/SEC Network TV contract.

According to Mainieri after the game, Bain "tweaked" something on the play where he fielded a ground ball and then made an awkward throw to Bush covering the base that went 10 feet over Bush's head. PM didn't give any specifics as to what was tweaked.

I DVR'd the game and went back and looked at that play and you could see Bain holding his side as he walked back to the bag after the play was over. Also after the game the camera showed Mainieri talking with Bain and the team's trainer. I couldn't figure out what Mainieri was saying but I could read Bain's lips saying "I'm fine."

It's all about the $, more games is more tickets, I'm surprised they haven't found a way to double the amount of games we play

I think CPM’s thinking is we probably aren’t going to win the NC this year or make I to Omaha. So let’s let these players play as many games as possible in a postseason atmosphere to get ready for next season. A lot of players on this team especially pitchers will be playing key roles on the team next year. Good to have this experience moving forward.

Not sure I agree that CPM thinks this team can’t make it to Omaha. My guess is that as a competitor and high ego coach he thinks they can win. However I do agree that he knows they can use as much postseason success experience as they can get for the new guys and guys with low on field experience for previous years. That helps this year and next.

Life can be tough. IMO team sports, such as baseball, teaches a valuable lesson a young athlete will need to succeed in life. For example how to play through pain and mental toughness. Mental toughness separates the winner from the also ran. The tougher the better. Billy Cannon epitomized mental toughness so well.

I am immensely proud of OUR LSU baseball players, and our girls softball team. No matter the results today or the rest of the season they have represented LSU and their parents well.

Thanks for the memories!!

Now let's go out and win an SEC Championship!

So, now that the CWS field is set, let's re-visit the teams that "threw" their conference tournament compared to those who played to win it:
Oregon St: No conference tournament
Washington: No conference tournament
Texas: Played to lose the tournament, 2 & Q
Texas Tech: Played to lose the tournament, 1-2
UNC: 2 & Q
Mississippi State: One and done
Arkansas: Three games
Florida: 1-2

Compared to the teams that won their tournament:
ACC: FSU (4 games) Lost in Regional
SEC: Ole Miss (5 games) Lost in Regional
B12: Baylor (4 games) Lost in Regional

And, not to mention, LSU (6 games) Lost in Regional

Seems the smart move is to throw the conference tournament and rest up the staff. Just like these guys did:
