Meh - Loston was great against the run, but decent in pass coverage.
The two DTs didn't do much at all last year and they won't be big losses.
Barrow was ok, he didn't do that much either.
The defense lacked leadership last year. The best players on the defense from a year ago are returning. White, Robinson, and Alexander.

Bama is in serious trouble at QB
This is the truth. I will take our QB situation any day and all day over what the Gumps have going on over there. They also have big time question marks at LT. Either Robinson is really that good or they are in big time trouble at LT to start a true freshman at that spot. Question marks at LB and big time question marks in the defensive back field.
But because they bring back a stable of running backs and wide receivers they are the consensus #2 in every poll

These are the type statements that are spewed by ignorant fans or those who want LSU to fail. Of coarse losing any starter is a big deal. It just seems like it's a bigger deal to LSU than to other teams like Wisconsin, who lost 7 from their starting defense,or Alabama that lost damn near the whole O-Line and 2 time national championship winning QB.
We may lose this game and go on to lose 3 or 4 games but I would take LSU's whole team over any Wisconsin or Big 10 team that takes the field this year. You don't win on returning starters you win with coaching and talent!

Why do LSU fans (and really, fans of specific teams in general) not realize that that they themselves know FAR MORE about their team than any national or even regional sports talking head?
absolutely. it isn't a slight that some guy at ESPN headquarters or whomever else doesn't know every LSU player and their spot on the depth chart.
the real problem is the disparity of objectivity amongst national media. if you want to complain, OP, complain about the fact that we're ranked based on what we lost but the gumps are ranked highly just because. i mean, coker is on the heisman and maxwell watch lists, for christ's sake. i don't even think he'll start.

Frick no, we can't all agree. I'm praying it's true. But Ego and AJ kept QT and CT on the bench last year. Surely they've improved, but enough to be better? As good?

amen. these guys are paid to talk about teams they only know the bare bones about. fans, in general, eat their shite up and often take what they say as the gospel. it's like preseason polls or "the 10 best cities to live" garbage. it is pure drivel. I think i'm smart enough to know what LSU has to offer and don't need some semi-knowledgable talking head to educate me (and I know many LSU fans far more knowledgable than me).

The past 2 years has seen a steady decrease in TFLs. We won't be worse than last year for sure which was the lowest number in 10 years, including the terrible 08 season.

sadly, they did more than any other player returning on our defensive line.
Barrow- led our team in tackles
Loston- led our team in INT
Freak- led our team in Tackles for loss

Mills was tied with Loston in INT. But let's look at these losses:
Tackles: 3 of the top 5 return, 7 of top 10.
INT: 4 of the top 6 return
TFL: 4 of the top 5 return, 7 of the top 10
Sacks: 4 of the top 5 return, 7 of top 10
I'll leave it up to you whether you think LSU's losses of defensive production are severe.

Look, Tony Barnhart NEVER gives LSU credit. Never has. He focuses on the East and Alabama and Auburn.
One of the most biased and least knowledgeable football people who ever got behind a mic, his shite was bad enough in the paper prior to that. Strongly believe he wishes he was Bama boy instead of UGA guy. If you can listen to him more than 45 seconds check your pulse as you may be dead.

You were trashing this dude in the 2013 offseason. Now you want to say he's a big loss because of his production?

Couldn't agree more. Also, I feel like Ego and AJ didn't give consistent EFFORT and neither lived up to their expectations.
Experienced doesn't always mean better. Example: we had experienced corners last year that were displaced by 2 true freshmen (very talented freshmen). I think this year's defense will be significantly better than last years. By how much, only time will tell.

Tony Barnhart is a speckled pea eating Georgia cracker.
It always cracks me up when they refer to him as a college football "Expert". Talk about a stone skimmer... his analysis is about as shallow as a swimming pool for a bunch of pygmys. If the interviewer had asked him the names and positions of the players LSU was losing, I guaranty you he would have been caught with his fat arse hanging out!

All the loses on defense were addition by subtraction. Ego and freak were underwhelming for as talented as they were. Ego was the biggest lose bc he could have been a real force this year. Loston was solid but we have that and more in the guys coming up behind him.
While this defense is young, I think it will be as good as in 2011.
I think we have difference makers at every level and several superstars in the making.
Offense is the question mark and I respect any critic who wants to throw that out there. Don't BS and say the defense is questionable though.

I don't think they are severe losses.
I'm saying they were bright spots on an other wise "bad" LSU defense, by our standards.
If people are going to discount what they did, then you have to look at what the other guys did. Which was next to nothing. Young guys naturally get better, so we should be better this year. But Im not going to cry if an outsider isn't going to give us credit for that.

I don't see how people don't see this as a good thing. All we can do is go up from here.

I think the biggest positive the Dline has over last year is depth. Chavis didn't have the depth last year. AJ wasn't bringing it every down. Sure there were flashes, but we were wearing down in the second half. Also the linebacker core will help out any deficiencies from the Dline until they get comfortable and gel. We all know how strong the defensive backfield is. I'm excited to see how the line stacks up against WI!
