LSU lost both starting pitchers last from last year and their best pitcher for this year, Walker, hasn't played in 2018. Their starting middle infield from last year is gone, and their starting middle infield this year is out with injuries. This season has seen injuries hit at least five starters. LSU has also had to replace its starting catcher from last year and its star first baseman.

Somehow, midway through the season, LSU is but a game out of first place in the West. This is in a conference where at one point or another most west teams have been nationally ranked.

LSU has hosted a regional each of the last seven years.

LSU has won the West 4 of 7 times in the last 7 years.

LSU has won the SEC tournament 3 of the last 7 years.

LSU has been in the college world series 3 times in the last 7 years.

To put this in perspective, there are 14 teams in the SEC, so on average you should win an SEC championship once every 14 years. There are 7 teams in the West, so on average you should win the conference once every seven years.

The West always has good teams in it that will go through cycles. A down year for LSU in the last seven years is finishing second in the West.

With so many starters from 2017, most everyone predicted a down year for LSU this year, some had LSU finishing 5th in the West.

Maybe that's where they end up, we will see. But to this point, like him or not, I think you have to tip your hat to Mainieri.

Without one starting pitcher from last year and with a second string middle infield he has LSU in contention midway through the season.

The West is still pretty wide open and LSU could yet finish in the bottom half. But there is reason for hope. Injuries has forced LSU to play a lot of players. Inconsistent starting pitching has made LSU throw a lot of pitchers. Hopefully this has improved our depth for the stretch run.

With all they lost from last year and the injuries so far this year, it's been a good coaching job.
It was a much needed sweep against a very young Tenn team who had no confidence in their bullpen.

LSU is in position going into the two most important series of the year against Ole Miss and Ark coming up.

Hopefully no letdown on the road against South Carolina as this team has yet to play their best on the road so far. They should win at least 2/3 this weekend.

This is his best coaching job at Lsu, so far. From dealing with having to replace your weekend rotation from a season ago to the injuries sustained this year, there is a reason why coach has won 1,400 games.

It's been a good one but 2016 was his best coaching job IMO. We lost 8 of 9 bats in the starting lineup and still earned a national seed. If we finish out strong and earn a national seed this year, then an argument could certainly be made

I was coming to say this. Can’t imply the SEC championship is some random event.

ETA: good post though

That is a great point to reference. The only difference would be the injuries, which is why I still say this is his best coaching job to date. I'll even stand by that if they don't get a national sees this season.

It still amazes me that we started with Smith and Broussard up the middle, but here we sit in mid-April with Hal Hughes and Austin Bain starting at SS/2B.

It almost seems normal at this point, but it would have sounded asinine 2 months ago. Either that, or it would be the leftovers in the 9th inning of a 15 run midweek game.

And yet, here we sit in practically the identical spot we were in last year with a VERY veteran team.

I see your idea here, but you are proving OP's point. It wasnt worded very well, but you should get the drift,...cmon now. Its not random or equal chance, BECAUSE Manieri has LSU winning quite often.

Yes, thank you.

I was writing theoretically to make a point.

If we started a league tomorrow of 14 teams and each team hired a great coach, on average that great coach would only win one championship very 14 years.

There is no doubt that LSU baseball has such a history of success that all things are not created equal and any coach coming to LSU has a built in recruiting advantage.

But as we learned during the Smoke Laval era, that advantage is no guarantee of success. Its a strong league and in recent years other SEC teams have been improving their facilities and have very strong programs as well.

How can you suggest LSU on average should win the West 1 out of 7 years and an SEC championship once every 14 years? Tell me, is LSU an AVERAGE baseball program?

While I agree losing all three of your starting pitchers from last year as well as having an unusual number of injuries to position players has made the accomplishments of this team so far pretty darn good. But the big boys on the schedule are coming up soon. Let's wait until the end of the season to see if Mainieri deserves a tip of the hat. You are a little premature.

I do question the hiring of the staff he has. LSU is an elite program, again ELITE. Do you think we have an elite staff?

also not having Storz, potentially the best pitcher on the team, but he could be back in full form by the end of the year...which is nice

Much love to coach mainieri. I'll admit that I usually overestimate the prospects of LSU teams, but I figured this year was going to be rough for baseball. As rebuilding years go, this one is shaping up pretty good!

this is a assuming all teams are equal when they certainly are not. Teams like LSU should do much better than 1 SEC title in 14 years

TAMU is chopped liver?? What’s premature is your chicken little rant when all PM teams do is finish strong. There’s an expectation of it as the precedent was set years ago. I guess you started watching baseball this year.
