Emotional reactions to a coaching hire don't mean anything. Steele's defenses will determine how this turns out, not the temporary PR situation. You don't make hires to appease the fans. You make the hire that you believe is the right one.

I agree with all of this. But, PR and making a quality hire are not mutually exclusive.

You are making an assumption that Miles believes Steele is the best person to lead the defense...and that he made that decision after conducting a professional, thorough search.

In truth, the appearance is very different. Steele's name was mentioned almost immediately. And, the general consensus was that it would be a poor hire. There was a loud negative reaction to his name. Miraculously, several reports come out talking about the huge amount of interest LSU was receiving. Miles was interviewing dozens of candidates. Yet, in the end, the search ended where it started.

Miles has never had less support from the fan base than he does today. And, that's less than he had yesterday.

You may find that meaningless. Or, you may make an obvious statement that "winning cures all". But, having a fan base as negative as our's is right now is not a good thing. It doesn't help in recruiting. It doesn't help in the stadium.

And, I'm telling you. If Steele turns out to be a poor hire, Miles is done. And, I'm probably understating it. If our defense turns out to be significantly worse in 2015 than it was in 2014, it's over.

Hurt feelings aside, it's hard to imagine Nick Saban having a guy on his staff that isn't very competent. Let's face it, Saban's known as a taskmaster and not in the business of making friends with his assistants. If you are there, it's because you bring something of value to the position. Just sayin.

And I don't think this is all miles or allevas doing. I think the defensive coaches also had a say in this hire. Well that's good because next year is put up or shut up time and ill be hoping they bring some mutha f*ckin pain

Saban didn't have him on staff as his defensive coordinator, so I'm not sure how that's relevant. He may be very good at a lot of football related things, but the evidence from his career so far is that coordinating a defense is not one of those things.

Maybe he ends up being good, but it's still a bad look for a supposedly prestigious program like LSU to go digging around in another teams garbage for a hire.

Bingo! More than a few on this forum and around college football think Nick walks on water and Steele was good enough to be Nick's DC and for Nick to hire him a 2nd time.

We have two of the very most successful HCs in the SEC/college football who have hired Steele, one of them hired the guy 2 times, but it's a failed hire before the 1st snap. How bout we lighten up and get over ourselves.

I will give Nick and Les the benefit of the doubt and see what happens before I begin pissing in my pants over a done deal that no one has a clue as how it will plays out.

I can start playing B-Ball every day and undoubtedly will get better. It doesn't mean the Bulls are going to offer me a contract.

He's one of the best "Fits" according to the criteria laid down by Captain Miles. Let him coach a season before judgement comes down.

And maybe, just maybe, he'll bring in some of those Alabama style 250 lb Linebackers that yall have been wanting!

Sink or swim Captain.

Shite or get off the pot in 2015.

Now get O in here to coach the DL. Don't know if Haley wants to coach with Steele again or not.......

This guy was having nervous breakdowns at Clemson when games got intense. He was also calling defensive plays to the clemson defense that the players had no idea what he was talking about. He had got confused and used his old teams play calls.

i'm gonna need a link to this - i live in S. Carolina and have never heard anyone mention this.

I am a Tiger. This is my team. I support the players and coaches as a fan of my team.

Like many, am I thrilled with the hire? No, but I can't impact or change the decision and I am not going to waste my time spewing counter productive vitriol. It may make the internet badasses criticizing the hire feel bigger or better, but ultimately it serves no purpose. CLM is accountable for this hire, which will likely be a determining factor in how long he remains our coach. For better or worse, we are now postured at a point that this will have to play itself out starting next season.

The productive thing to do at this point is get behind the team. We will learn of answers to the questions involving the quality of the hire, CLM's tenure, etc. in due time.

This article says that Kevin Steele worked at LSU before he went to Alabama. Is this true?
quote:

Steele was most recently Clemson's defensive coordinator from 2009-11 and was an administrative aide and consultant to his longtime friend, John Chavis, at LSU last season.

uh, yeah, gonna take some prayer.
At least they didn't hire Bama's DC whose D was shredded by Ohio State.
