quote:sure, but it is also to protect the coach financially. This isn't a one-way contract.
Schools usually put buyouts in place so other schools or NFL won't poach their Coaches.

the fact that it wasn't one way shows how terrible this deal is
O has literally negative leverage. there were literally no 1A schools who were looking at him for HC. he had little to offer and nothing to threaten JA with in negotiations. at worst, we lose a DL coach who recruits (which grow on trees in CFB)
if we said "we want a $3M buyout" what's O going to say? "Ok i'l walk and take a $3M paycut and go back to being DL coach somewhere"
?
no

I thought the buyout was added to O's contract after the bowl game for no real reason.
Which is just as dumb when nobody else was even trying to hire him.

All Alleva did with Herman's contract was lower the salary and change the name to Ed Orgeron.

Texas was willing to offer Saban $100 million-plus to leave Alabama, Finebaum writes in new book
In fact, it appears they didn’t negotiate with Oregon at all. It looks like Alleva simply applied some white-out over Herman’s name to write Orgeron’s over it, chopped the salary down by a couple million and handed Coach O a contract to sign.
Oh I get it. The media is only truthful or presents info as facts when you say it does.

Perhaps a young ranter should "George O'Leary" Coach O. Fact check all the details of his bio and resume. If he's lied to the university about anything, that's cause, and no buyout is required.

That's one helluva run-on sentence.
But yes. Alleva gave O that insane buyout to protect himself.

why does it exclusively show that?
why couldn't it show "look we know you really biffed it in your last head coaching gig, and while we really do believe that you have learned a lot from your time at ole miss, we want to protect the football program in case you haven't?"

There is absolutely no logical reason to hire a resume such as Coach O has and giving that resume a $12 million buyout is absolutely insane.

Possibly on the Alleva angle, plus, as a coach, the perception is bad if you have a low buyout...shows low commitment from university.
Why not have a *wink wink* $12M buyout that's easy to get out of?
Alleva could have included language in the contract that would protect the school if CEO was an abysmal failure.

If that was Alleva's line of thinking, then he shouldn't have gotten his panties in a wad and given the job to O when Herman to Texas happened and actually conducted a REAL coaching search.

As I recall your "info" was that Saban would be the next coach at Texas. I'm sure you think it took a real insider to figure out Texas would offer Saban a lot of money?
And butt hurt? Nah. Just enjoy pointing out hypocrisy.

d he just adjusted the base salary of the Herman contract and presented it to Orgeron. I guess forgetting how big the buyout was

So, it looks like Mack is likely gone. The UT football banquet is tonight. Was told that Mack will probably announce by Sunday that he is done.
Saban will not get formal offer until Mack has officially resigned.
UT confident that Saban will take the job, but unsure how Alabama will react once Sexton shows Alabama what Texas has offered.
Was told that there is no way that Saban would get a percentage of the Longhorn Network...more likely some type of signing bonus to front him money.
My source thinks that things will move very fast after Mack's announces his retirement and that if you don't hear Saban announced as new UT coach by Wednesday, then he is likely not leaving Alabama.
where do I say that Saban will be the next coach at Texas?

I can’t figure any of this out. It seems to go against all sports logic. I was stunned by Coach O even being in the running for the LSU head coach gig. So, what do I know.
Unless Joe has gone into some kind of early dementia, your thought about it sounds as reasonable as any. I assume both he and the board wanted to give Coach O some type of guarantee that he would be here 2-3 years no matter what. The insane buyout seems to have done that.
While I can understand Joe and Coach O seeing that as the best thing for them, it’s beyond me how anyone could think that was the best thing for LSU.

And if you want to get rid of O, do it, but as much as I want him wrong I’ve been convinced that we gotta give him a second year to protect the image of how we will treat a head football coach here.
In most cases I would agree with you; however, every coaching candidate we would pursue understands O is a joke and grossly under qualified. If we go 3-9 no one would blame us for giving him the ax except maybe his mom.
