Lady Scone, who I rarely agree with, suggested on his show this week that the only way we can fund LSU's collective is with a couple of dollar tax on each ticket sale.
I heard him make this suggestion, and I’m not convinced it would even be legal.
State law says that neither “a postsecondary institution” (i.e. LSU) nor “an entity whose purpose includes supporting or benefiting such institution or its intercollegiate athletic programs” (i.e. TAF) can compensate an athlete for NIL.
I’m not sure there’s any distinction between LSU/TAF compensating athletes directly vs. paying an NIL collective that then compensates the athletes.
I’m also not convinced you can reasonably argue that the ticket holders are the ones actually paying the NIL collective if the athletic department/TAF are the ones implementing and collecting the fee.
I’m not saying it would 100% be illegal, but at that point you’re really opening yourself up to potential problems (keeping in mind that currently, the NCAA uses individual state laws as the barometer for what is/is not permissible).
I can certainly see the argument for taking a “consequences be damned” approach and calling the NCAA’s bluff. I guess it comes down to whether you think they’ll eventually make an example of someone.

What we really need is a lot more posters chiming in to say that Todd is trying to promote his business everywhere he has restaurants, and not just Louisiana, as though they're the first poster to arrive at this startling revelation.

Todd continually screwing LSU ever since his professor told him the concept of Cane's would never work.

Exactly

Did this really happen, or did someone just lift the famous Fred Smith FedEx story?

Todd needs to invest only in LSU or we are going to be playing form behind in the NIL game for a long time.
He's doing it for his business, not LSU fans.

That's what the rumor is. I remember talking to the owner of Fred's at my old job when he came in. Idk how it came up, but it was brought up that Todd told him his plan about Cane's as well. The reply back to Todd was that it would never work because you need to sell more than just chicken fingers in South Louisiana. Needs at least other fried options like shrimp, catfish, etc.
Looking back, the idea really should never have worked, but it did.

I may be wrong, but I don't think that would be allowed. They can promote the collective, but accepting money and and making payments to the collective seems like that might be blurring some lines.
quote:definitely not allowed from the link-> Schools also can request donors provide funds to collectives and other NIL entities, provided the schools do not request that those funds be directed to a specific sport or student-athlete.
The ticket tax would have to be dedicated to the sport for which you purchased the ticket.

I wonder if Shaq could help make some NIL deals happen with the national companies and businesses he’s involved with?

Appreciate the info. I was wondering how collecting a ticket tax would be possible since NIL Collectives are supposed to operate separately from the university.

Again, appreciate the clarification. If a ticket tax can't be sport specific then it isn't a good idea. The vast majority would be generated by the football program only to see the additional revenue diluted for "equity".
