I hope it is truly $4.99 a month and NOT $4.99 a month based on a $59.88 yearly membership.

For $4.99 per month, the direct-to-consumer format will help users forgo the need for a television subscription in order to view live sports via the ESPN app and ESPN.com.

4.99 is great if that includes all ESPN channels.

I will say that a lot of cable companies give large discounts for bundling TV and internet, so dropping TV wouldn’t save you a lot of money.

So yeah, you pay 4.99 for ESPN, but your internet goes up $50 a month.

I would seriously consider discontinuing my sling TV subscription. There is currently nothing on TV other than live sports that I can't wait 6 months to watch on Netflix or Amazon prime.

How do you figure that? Internet is a separate entity from cable. The cable is what costs so much, not the internet. They just make it appear to be cheaper on the TV side so you're not pissed when you get your bill.

This appears to be $4.99/mo for the junk that is not on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNNews, SECN, etc.

That should be fine assuming you don't mind missing stuff on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SECn, etc.

Those things won't be on ESPN+.

What I'm not sure is how this effects ESPN3/WatchESPN....I'm wondering if ESPN is going to expect people subscribed to ESPN and SECn to pay 4.99/month to watch LSU baseball. That seems like something Disney would do.

Maybe for some.

A year ago, I was paying $40 a month for slow arse ATT U-Verse internet (the fastest they offered for my area was 3mbs) and $90 a month for Dish Top 120+ (1 regular and 1 DVR receiver). I had Netflix and Amazon too.

I cancelled my Dish and shitty ATT. Then I got a good HD antenna for locals (one time $80), 30mbs internet service (pay by the month and no contract) for $50 a month, sling TV w/sports package for $30 a month (a la cart w/ no contract).

I went from $130/month to $80/month for the same thing plus much faster internet for streaming HD/UHD content.

Now, if the ESPN subscription included all ESPN and SECN content, I would go from $80 to $55 a month. With the money I'd save, I could upgrade my Blu-Ray Home Theater system to a 4K HTS next year around the time that more UHD content becomes available and comes down some in price.

I dropped cable over a year ago and do slingtv instead and pay about half as much as I did prior and actually get more sports channels than I did prior.

That’s true only if they no longer let you log in with your cable info and stream.

If it’s just a way to get people without cable access, then it shouldn’t affect those with cable.

Serious question, why do you guys say this? Would it really make a difference if he labelled it SEC app or something?

I only pay for internet and to add cable would be like $40 more per month. I'll take paying for netflix and espn over paying twice as much for cable.

Thanks for sharing what you did. I'm looking to drop my Direct TV once my contract is up this summer. I've bookmarked this post for future use. Thanks again buddy
