It's really amazing that people actually think the saints should go after the highest rated LSU player available on their board instead of the highest rated player available on the entire board regardless of school affiliation. Do you realize how bad any team would be of they used that concept in the draft?
They have 3 31 year old LBs on their roster in the last year of their contract and none have the speed and cover skills like Queen and they passed. It cost them a move to go get a guy that ran a 4.65 that won’t be able to cover TEs or slot receivers. ucking get out of here with that bullshite. They could have gotten one of the other MANY Olinemen that were as good or better than the one when they took later. Go look at their draft grade.

Slot receiver vs a LB is a mismatch all day long and NFL QBs will take advantage of it every time. Ruiz was the top interior lineman in the draft so no there were none that were better later on. Zack Baun was rated higher than Queen by many people and would have gone in the 1st round if not for having a diluted drug test at the combine.

What is the truth about the Saints drafting Penn State players? Oregon players? Illinois players? Why are you connecting the Saints with LSU?

Appreciate the post, bottom line is Payton has drafted 1 LSU player (Will Clapp) in his 14 years as coach of the Saints. Passing on Patrick Queen reaffirmed my belief that he doesn't hold LSU's talent in high regard. Defense has always been an afterthought for Sean. If the Saints had just a little more defense over the past 3 seasons, they may have had 3 more rings.

Maybe by some for his position as a run stopper and interior LB, but that is not the only position they get burned by at a lot. You made a trade to move up and could have gotten a tackle or guard like Lewis or a flex center like Cushenberry or a tackle that could move inside like Charles who had a 2nd round grade IF you’re going to try to go down the “character issue” trail if you’re thinking of just the LSU players available. That lineman from ULL Hunt was a straight up monster and could have gotten him by trading back and picked up a draft pick or another second round pick/ earlier 3rd pick. And he wouldn’t have any “character” issues to deal with. Just go look at Big 10 Pick Payton and you will always find your “business” errr Homer answer.

interior LB

It doesn’t matter because as a Texans fan, I’ve seen BOB do a shite load worse.
I’m going to enjoy watching Brady and Gronk light up Payton’s arse because he has shite for players to cover him.

Said this many times before the draft, drafting a linebacker in the first is just dumb. The position is devalued in the nfl like running back. I’m glad we passed on Queen. And like someone said, we got a player on the same level as Queen in the third to prove it.
I did have a problem when we passed on Collins and took Vaccarro over the Honey Badger. It has cost the saints over the years. Passed on D.Hunter and we had to trade two first round picks for a player that will likely not be as good and was a major reason you were sent home packing in the first round this year. So it has bit him in the a$$, more often than not.

That was before the invent of the offenses they run today. Hybrid LBs are gold in the NFL today because of all the covering they offer to faster TEs and RBs. That is old school thinking and none other than the Bucs, Falcons, 49’s and others who draft these types of players are all better because of it.

You didn’t get a player with the same skill set. You got a run stopper and someone who can rush. With 3 31 year old LBs going into their last year of their contract maybe he thinks he is going to make moves to pick up a speedy LB in trades or the draft next year. Picking an OL when he could have traded back and gotten Hunt in the second and gotten something in exchange like another second round pick by swapping the 3rd he had and used for the LB, he lost a shot at getting another position of need. He picked his center in the first round of last years draft. He did need a back-up interior OL, but certainly didn’t need to waste his first round pick on it. He’s got a 40 y/o QB and another guy that isn’t ready to take that spot while letting Bridgewater go to a division rival...
His draft grade was a C- by several sources. He had no strategy this entire offseason.
And the best part, I’m a Texans fan and am going to enjoy watching both the Saints and Texans get beat in their divisions because neither team matched their division rivals in the draft or offseason acquisitions. Tampa is going to destroy the Saints defense with Brady and Gronk if both stay healthy.

the Saints, which “should” know drafting a highly ranked LSU player would boost in-state interest and possible season tickets, have NOT done so.
The efect on season ticket sales would be virtually nil.
