The thing that scares me the most going forward: targeting

Defense has been playing much better and that’s great. But our depth at a few positions is pretty thin.

A poorly timed targeting can strip this Defense of some important starters.

SEC refs have shown they have no clue how to call targeting.

Let’s just hope our coaches continue to stress the importance of clean hits.

I understand the concern, but at least for LSU games, it has been handled fairly well by the refs. Ultimately, the correct call has been made.

The officials have done a pretty good job in the last two LSU games of reversing targeting calls that weren't "targeting".

The reversal of the Weeks targeting gave me some confidence but after watching Georgia-Texas debacle last week….

Honestly can targeting just go away. Bring back the old spear rule and things would be better.

it’s hard because you want a rule that doesn’t have too much room for interpretation but throwing a kid out because a offensive player ducked their head or there was a small collision with a helmet on a “defenseless” player is fricked

If you listen to Sage's quotes from Wednesday's player media availability, he specifically mentions taking a route to avoid the targeting - can't remember if he talks about them being coached that way, but that is immediately what I thought when listening to his comment.

Automatic ejections for targeting is the worst rule that college football has ever come up with

I disagree, I believe refs are finally interpreting the way it’s written and not being so robotic about it. Ryan’s hit was textbook, hit the guy in the chest and his neck slung forward causing his facemask to make contact with Sage’s back. The initial contact was the chest not the head. Last year, it’s targeting all day.

Should be a 3 strike rule that covers the entire season.

Once you get hit with 3 it’s a 1 game suspension.

ETA: that’s if you keep the rule. Again, I prefer the old spear rule.

The problem with the rule is the offensive player lowering their head and getting no punishment.

Agree with this. The whole point of the targeting rule is to push the player safety narrative. Yet, you have players putting themselves in further arm by lowering their helmets at the last second. I remember either the NCAA or NFL tried to address this with RBs lowering their heads to deliver hits, but as expected you saw a handful of flags that year, then it was never heard from again.

Targeting shouldn't even be a penalty. This is football!

Worst rule in football, ever. Until they start ejecting running backs for leading with their heads and adjust the rule that protects the defender when the offensive player changes levels, then the rule is not to be taken serious.

It's a contact sport with risk. Let them play.

Whiff on the tackle completely in order to avoid targeting. I like it...

quite often initiated by the offensive player. Somehow, the refs have to be able to determine that both players can often times create the problem just by ducking the heads, and call it a no foul. Going back to launching with the crown of the helmet should be a must to have such a severe penalty by the def player. I have yet to see an offensive player be called for targeting, and I really don't understand that. the rule is important but should be revised from what it presently is.

I hate targeting so much. The only targeting should be crown of the helmet. The stupid defense less player BS has led to these ticky tacky calls. It should only be crown of the helmet and it should be enforced on defense and offense. If the offensive player lowers the crown of his head to run through a defender he should be flagged for targeting.

This defenseless player BS is what makes the rule infuriating because they throw the flag for literally everything. Devin White's targeting is still one of the worst calls I have ever seen with that stupid rule.
