The Real (non-scandalous) Reason Harold Perkins Only Played Two Plays on Defense

I. There was no suspension or disciplinary action.
• Damario Tolan played in Q3 and Q4.
• Harold Perkins played in Q2 and Q3.
• Their assignments appear to have been given prior to the game and were related solely to the sub packages to which they were assigned.

II. Damario Tolan played exclusively as the Sam linebacker in the Base 3-4 package.
• LSU is bringing him along slowly, just like they have with Harold Perkins.
• Tolan Played in 5 separate downs on defense:
-- 3rd and 1 with 13:05 remaining in the 3rd Quarter
-- 4th and 1 with 3:16 remaining in the 3rd Quarter
-- 1st and 10 with 11:26 remaining in the 4th Quarter
-- 3rd and 3 with 8:53 remaining in the 4th Quarter (made the tackle)
-- 4th and 3 with 7:54 remaining in the 4th Quarter.

III. Harold Perkins played exclusively as the Will linebacker in the 2-3-6 Dime package.
• Perkins spied the QB from the Will position, taking the QB's left side away while Baskerville spied from the QB's right side.
• CBK specifically stated that he didn't want “Harold... to stand out on the numbers playing the game as the Sam.”

IV. But LSU only ran the Dime package twice.
• Here are the plays:
-- 3rd and 10 with 0:13 remaining in the 2nd Quarter
-- 3rd and 11 with 8:02 remaining in the 3rd Quarter
• On the 2nd play there was confusion:
-- Sage Ryan seemed to be uncertain about something.
-- Harold Perkins wasn't even looking at the ball when it was snapped.
• When subbing from Nickel to Dime, LSU got a penalty for 13 players on the field:
-- Mike Jones (Will) was replaced by Harold Perkins (Will). Jones got off the field.
-- Ali Gaye (DE) was replaced by Sage Ryan (Dime). Gaye walked too slowly.
-- Jacobian Guillory (NT) was replaced by Jaquelin Roy (NT). Guillory walked too slowly.

V. LSU DC Matt House must have decided that he could defend 3rd and long with Nickel.
• No need for substitutions (or substitution infractions).
• Less confusion for the DBs.
• Since Harold Perkins was used on both occasions as a Spy, and since Tennessee had the game in hand by the 3rd Quarter, there was little need for Hooker to scramble and there was little need for a Spy to stop him from running.

At what point, as a coach, do you concede that your game plan is absolute crap and put the guy on the field?

. When Penn missed the sack that we all wish was Perkins. Right then you go- "hey get 40
In the fricking game"

If we held Tennessee to 20's I would say fine, it was a good plan.

But when you give up a 40 spot at home....

Hard to defend that

Guys with Perkins’ ability make up for alot of other frickups. Their own and others.

He needs to be in the field. Period.

The bigger question is what kind of plan calls for leaving one of your 3 best players on the bench for the entire game? How does that sound like a good idea BEFORE you even step on the field?

The defense wasn't the problem.

Um...yes, the defense was *a* problem. I'll grant you that Special Teams didn't set them up for success early, but they GAVE UP 40 POINTS.

That IS a problem. Hard to win consistently even with a Joe Burrow team when you give up 40 POINTS. Anyone remember the Texas game? (Yeah we won, but don't tell me you were sure we were going to until AT LEAST 3rd and 17.)

Now...was defense the ONLY problem? Could we have won with a better offense and special teams performance? Probably. But don't blow smoke all over our asses with that take.

Tennessee’s receivers being open by ten yards nearly every time they threw the ball isn’t a problem to you???? Just wow

At some point you have to throw scheme out the window and decide that a player is too talented to not be on the field. Perkins should’ve played more regardless of what defense or coverage the game plan called for

House can’t bench Perkins without Kelly’s approval. Fans did this under Les and O, trying to blame coordinators for HC decisions and even though it was exposed and proven to be wrong our fans are still doing it.

Remember when you guys whined and whined about Devin White being suspended for the first half of Bama? Yeah, Bama whipped us pretty good in that first half, but we were in striking distance, and we had Devin back for the second half. Then Bama whipped us a lot worse in the second half.

It would not have mattered. Tennessee beat us because they are a lot better than us. The coaches did their best, but you can’t scheme away that kind of advantage, especially when Bech hands them a score on the opening kickoff.

Not sold yet on Tenn being that great yet. We were the best they have played and every aspect of our team executed poorly and every bounce went against us. Let's see how they do against bama

I don’t remember Devin White or Tyrann Mathieu playing situationally. I think you put your playmakers in there as much as possible and let them make plays.

Sometimes coaches whether it’s pee wee or the nfl need to just bite the bullet and play the most talented and dangerous player regardless of assignment. Of course it can bite you but talent is always the ultimate wild card when things are tough

Defense held up great in the first half IMO.

Muffed kick, punt return, and sack before half spotted UT a bunch of points.

They just got tired and demoralized in the second half. Happens.

ST and offense are the units to blame. Not the defense.

I don't for 1 minute believe they are bringing Perkins/Tolan along slowly.

Campball is a freshman and it's trial by fire with him.

The staff got behind early and they didn't know what to do.
