For the sake of argument, let's assume this is true. Some here have quoted this as evidence that this is a good move.

This same argument was used to 1) retain Miles and 2) hire Orgeron.

We used to have leaders and Athletic Directors with level heads and strong minds.

Bob Brodhead responded this way to Arnsparger's demand that coaches and players be given input into bowl selection.

quote:

Arnsparger's proclamation that the "Head Coach and players will be given input into bowl game selection" evoked a simple response from me:

No they wouldn't.

As Director of Athletics, it was up to me to make the decisions which would prove most advantageous to the Athletic Department as a whole. That did not include placing a million-dollar decision into the hands of a football coach, or subjecting it to the whims of a group of twenty-year-old football players. That went out when the 1959 squad voted not to go to the Sugar Bowl

The "one million" figure sounds quaint. With exponentially more money at stake, we're returning to our bumbling ways of the Dietzel era and the Dean era with our present leadership.

we all know that when the players love the hire it usually means it's shitty. Just like them loving O being hired.

This is not necessarily true. Players are always going to love the coaches they’ve built relationships with, and that’s good. That has no bearing, however, on whether those coaches are good or bad. I don’t fault the kids for loving the coaches that recruited them and worked with them every day.

But their input is only based on their relationship.
It should not be considered as evidence the coach they want is a good hire.

They like him as a person and how he treats the players. Of course the players will support him. He is a good person but the question is in all honesty could he really coach?

FWIW our top WR recruit, Terrace Marshall loves the Ensminger hire and knew about it BEFORE he committed

Pretty sure Brennan does as well

The players should not be in charge of coaching decisions and their reaction shouldn't be given any weight.

They "went wild" when Bama was picked as the opponent in the 2011 Championship game too.

its not stupid or arrogant. Coaches should be hired on their merits and qualifications not because they are liked.

probably because he's developed a good relationship with steve, so that's not all that surprising man. Come on

The hire won over the endorsement of a teenager. Neat

Anyone remember Hal Hunter?

The team rallied around him in 1999.

The team was adamant that he would be their new head coach.

The people in charge said no and actually had a coaching search and hired some guy named Nick Saban.

Sometimes the people that see past 4 years need to make the decisions required to keep the program heading in the right direction.

Teams shouldn't hire coaches because the players like them. They should hire them because they are good at their job and get results.
