Tackling is definitely an issue. It's definitely not the only issue.

Defensively, Ego Ferguson needs to step up his game a lil more and start annihilating whoever is tryin to block him with Freak constantly being double teamed.
After rewatching the game we rushed 4 guys most of the game. Ego and Freak were doubke teamed all night and git pressure. But thats exoected against an inferior oppinent.

Its looking like Lamar Louis might be the next MLB to get a crack at it.

yeah, I here you. When I said annihilate whoever has him one on one. I was really talking about the TCU game. I should have clarified, my bad. Ferguson got a lot of one on one that game. Johnson has been double teamed to death this season.

ISWYDT. I hear rap when I read that, but I think you should try Haiku as a vehicle for this new syntax.

After rewatching the game Neal looks like he would make one hell of a MLB.

Well bad angles equates to poor tackling because you are out of position and try to arm tackle.

The defense has been a pleasant surprise to me. The flaws shown (angles, 1v1 tackling)are correctable because the players are getting into the right position.
My concern is surprisingly with the offense.
1. Metts mobility - he was swamped by blitz packages last year and showed little ability to roll away from the pressure AND throw accurately on the run. Plus he is ... er ... not fast (kindest way to put it). There is apparent improvement but the jury is out until LSU faces a big-time defense.
2. Running back - reviewing the last 4 recruiting years, it is striking how few RBs have been recruited compared to ... say ... the recruiting at Alabama. I don't know why Miles doesn't seem want to, or be able to, recruit RBs (Hill is the only 4 star RB coming out of HS he recruited) but the RB situation mimics the QB recruitment process.
OL should be OK. Defense will improve by leaps during the season. The offensive backfield is of concern if even one starter gets hurt.

I think just about every team minus a couple would take our rb core over their own

Agreed Neighbors is going to be good. It has been overlooked that he is taking playing time away from Copeland so the coaches must think he is good!

"I think just about every team minus a couple would take our rb core over their own."+
You would be very wrong. Here are the only running backs recruited to LSU in the last 5 years, excluding HB/FBs.
2014 RB recruited (so far): Sione Palelei 3*
2013 RB recruited: None
2012 RB recruited: Jeremy Hill 4*
2011 RB recruited: Kenny Hilliard 4*, Terrance Magee 3*
2010 RB recruited: Alfred Blue 3*, Jakhari Gore 4*, Brandon Worle 3*
Both from numbers and from preceived quality, this is anemic. Five years worth of recruiting RBs at LSU looks like a single years haul at Alabama, etc. Heck Mississippi and State have more and higher ranked RB recruits during this period.
I suggest coldly looking at the compartive recruiting rosters for 2010-2014 for all the SEC teams instead of just repeating bar-talk about how good LSUs RBs are.

quote:I don't understand this as a concern. It is not a concern, but a known weakness of Mett. He's not RGIII back there. The way you solve it is precisely the way Cam seems to be solving it: your WRs work on getting separation, your backs and OL work on protection, your OC works on calls that keep Mett from being a sitting duck.

explain to me how RB is a weakness on the 2013 LSU team. Yes, LSU will have only two RBs returning next year (Hilliard, Magee) if J.Hill goes pro. And both will be seniors. But, this thread is about the 2013 team.

Some of our LB's and CB's are having problems shedding blockers. this will be an issue in the SEC...

"btw, two words: Leonard Fournette."
Yep, that would probably help a lot, if he doesn't get injured. What happens if he decides to go to ... oh ... Michigan or someplace?
Not saying that LSU's run game is anemic this year, just that the recruitment has left some questions. Yeh yeh.. I know a RB has a lot more tasks than just running the ball ... but I would feel better with a couple of more bodies.
Anyway, this line is about "concerns" ... and RB quality and depth is one of mine. Regards,

We've got some holes in our defense this season. That sucks, because it looks like the offense is gonna be potent- good enough to go undefeated with the average LSU defense.
Right now, our defense isn't average, not by our standards. Two games, and two teams have been able to run on us pretty well, and have had receivers running open in the secondary. Take note that there are about 5 teams on the schedule that have better offenses than we've faced so far.
We should score a lot more than we did last year, but I don't see this team shutting A&M down. Both teams might be in the 30's or 40's.
