Watching the NCAA T&F Championships, I am disappointed how our once great program under Pat Henry is now pedestrian. Is it time to make a HC move?

Wow the same could be said for most LSU sports currently minus basketball and a few other womens sports.

The men just finished 8th in the country. The women should finish in the top 5.
I read on here often that baseball is much more difficult today because more schools are putting money into their baseball programs. The same can be said for track, especially in the SEC.

How is this bad news? Both finish top 10. I have never followed track but this seems pretty solid

We were a handoff and a lean from finishing 3rd in the country. Go rewatch the 110 M hurdles and 4X1.

There is so much wrong with team titles BTW because of how they are scored. Not to take away from our women this year, we have zero field athletes that make a difference. Because a few athletes can get you a lot of points and because Shaver focuses on sprints, he must have them all be highly successful to win it all ie there are not many scoring opportunities across several events. In years past, the field events carried teams like Oregon and ASU. Distance plays a part as well.

I think the NCAA should reconsider how championships are won by adding scoring must come from a minimum of field events and running. That way a true “team” score means something.

We may win it today with our women. At a minimum they will be in the top 3 should they hold serve.

As far as Duplantis, he may eventually become a decathlete. He has the distance for the long jump, pole vault, 100, probably right there in the 400, 110 hurdles, and can likely easily learn the high jump, the 1600 shouldn’t be too difficult.
Javelin? Shot? Discuss?
He would be a scoring machine IMO winning 4 events or so each time maybe mkre.

Doubtful. His, and his father's, goal has always been to be the greatest pole vaulter the world has ever seen. You don't achieve that by learning the high jump and javelin.

This isn’t Pat Henry solid. When Pat Henry was running the program, LSU Track made Alabama football under Saban seem just ok. It was just taken for granted that LSU would win the national title and then everyone else fought it out for second.

Why does this matter? Football. Having the nation’s most dominant track program by far was great for recruiting speed/skill players in football.

Wanna get invited to the combine with the best possible chance of getting an elite 40 yard time once you’re there?

LSU’s track program mattered (and still does) to football.

bullshite. Baseball is still a great program and football is too be determined. LSU administration waited a year too long to ditch Miles.

and his mom was a Heptathlete. You saw him experimenting during his senior year.

As far as “greatest pole vaulter” versus greatest athlete. No comparison really. The winner of the Olympic and WC decathlon’s is considered the “worlds greatest athlete.” Which would you rather be considered he will be his own man. Has to set aside his “dad’s feelings/ intentions and be his own man some day. Daddy won’t be around forever.

He won’t be the greatest pole vaulter the world has ever seen... Greg is still pissed about having to compete against Bubka in his career. Greatest does not equal World record BTW - too many variables such as changes in pole technology, track speed, etc.
Bubka dominated for 10 solid years like no other.

He has a couple years to get to his optimal performance IMO as far as strength, speed and technique and there is a huge difference between where he is now and where he needs to go to break the WR. Duplantis has to go a 9” higher. That’s like dropping .5 seconds in the 100 M. Hard as hell to do.

I’m super excited to see what he can do at LSU and in His professional career. Hope he breaks the WR/ OR and dominates like no other. Just is hard to do.

This weekend Mondo Duplantis is competing in the Diamond League pro event in Stockholm against the best in the world. Here’s a link to the entrants which lists their season and personal bests coming into the event. LINK. Duplantis has the highest season best vault of anyone in the competition. I’d say LSU track is in good shape as far as pole vaulting is concerned.

Pat Henry won like 10 championships in a row!! Always were true title contenders. Man our fanbase has gotten so soft. It's like we all accept a little above average now. Hey its ok, the last 5 years of LSU football we ranked in the top 25 so that is good right?

No. have you seen Oregon, Arkansas, and A&M's resources/facilities?

look what the new facility did for gymnastics. maybe invest in the program and things will change.

then men are 100% going to be top 3 in the country next season btw

The game changed. What are Henry’s finishes the past 5 outdoor seasons with better resources than he had here?

No one will ever dominate like LSU's women did in the 80s and 90s. Yes, we know that they won every outdoor championship from 87-97 (and half of the indoor championships too) but that was always going to end. It was one of the greatest runs in any sport in NCAA history. But not sustainable, even by Pat Henry.

We have consistent top 10 programs. That is not something to cry about.
