The case against Matt House

Let's look at the 3 levels of the defense. Not at how they performed, BUT how they could/should have performed going into the season:
DL - With Smith, Wingo, Jefferson and Jones LSU should have had a top 10 DL in the country. Our DL ended up being average at best. This was the most disappointing thing to me throughout the season. Smith still forecasted to be a 1st round pick as NFL can see the talent.
LB - You have a top 3 defensive player in the country in Perkins, an all Pac 12 senior transfer LB, and Greg Penn. This should have been an above average SEC unit, no questions asked.
Secondary - This is the unit that was going to struggle, but had potential. Multiple 5 stars in Sage Ryan and Denver Harris... Major Burns was back. Experienced, but unproven transfers. Talented, but unproven young guys. Should be a bottom half SEC secondary.
Matt House DID NOT make the most of this defense at all. Other programs across the country did much more with less and would have killed to have this roster. With what should have been a top 10 DL, above average LBs and a struggling secondary we should have been at least an average SEC defense, which would have been enough to compete for a national championship with this offense.
Matt House, your time has come buddy.

Linebacker play sucked. I blame the coaches for their play calls and putting 2 5.5 40 guys on the field at the same time.
Weeks/Penn/Perkins should have been our linebacker set.
Or Weeks/Speights/Perkins
Penn and Speights should have never been on the field together.
For a NFL linebacker coach he made our backers look like shite.

All 3 losses honestly. Not that we should have gone undefeated, but giving up 42 to Bama when they can’t pass and flat out giving up be FSU.

Sure, but giving up 700+ yards to Ole Miss was the most egregious.

Never felt more helpless when an opposing offense took the field in 1 game.
708 yards, 88 plays ran against us, we only stopped them on 3 drives out of 12 all game
Absolute domination

I mean, nothing you said in the OP is wrong at all, but it's all pretty obvious that House sucks.
A more challenging, and interesting, exercise would've been trying to make an argument in favor of House. Might be impossible.

48 hours from the end of the ATM game makes me think he's being retained. Wouldn't one want to make the movement quickly since players are hitting the portal already and new head coaches are assembling their staff. If BK keeps him, and our defense sucks again next year, BK needs to be held responsible and fired.

I don’t think anyone would switch secondaries with us.
House did very little to hide them and that is my problem

This is the correct take... we have a slow defense... only two players impress with their speed, Weeks and Perkins...Burns can get there but still typical for a DB.
And defense is first and foremost a fast man's game. It is why we play so much zone and why crossing routes are never covered. Until the talent level increases, it will not matter who the DC is.

I mean the case for House is the defense didnt suck in 2022, and you could argue he dealt with not having a DL coach all season this year for what should have been the strength of the defense.
I'm not making arguments for why we should keep him, but just saying those are the ones that probably would be made by those people
Even if you ignore most of everything the most damning thing for House is he coaches the LBs and that SHOULD have been a very strong group of guys there between Perkins, Penn and an All-Pac12 12 guy...and it was a weakpoint all season long. Lots of questions surrounding are they even playing the best guys. Why is Perkins in a role he's much worse at than what he did last year, etc...

DL underperformed for the most part. Smith was often trying to do too much and that suspension hurt against FSU. Wingo wasn’t as explosive due to injuries. I don’t know what happened to Jones, he bulked up and now looks like the most unathletic guy on the DLINE. Jefferson was a monster the entire season, Guillory was playing his best since he’s been at LSU in those last few games. Shand was good at applying pressure but struggled some in maintaining the edge on run plays.
I think Jefferson is the only guy I listed that’s out of eligibility.

dont use that in your plea. He missed 80% of every tackle he was in position to make this year. That does not even address the times he was nowhere near the ball
He missed a tackle on the same player 2 different times on aTm's last TD. I will give him props for good hustle and not quitting on that play though

$2.1 million per year, though 2025, and you produce:
Nationally:
101st ranked total defense
92nd defensive pass efficiency
79th scoring defense
89th rushing defense
116th 3rd down defense
91st 1st down defense
Conference:
13th ranked total defense
13th ranked scoring defense
What is worse is that experiencing this defense is worse than the numbers. A&M's first scoring drive (17 plays for 64 yards) was absolutely excruciating.
Kelly will take a major hit with the fanbase if he doesn't fire House. It's an easy call. LSU faces a good offense to open 2024 regardless of who USC plays at QB. If you get shredded in that game with a new defensive coordinator, then at least you attempted to address the problem.

Are you 100% sure about this. I’m willing to bet that it won’t be as catastrophic as you think due to the "strong finish" to the season.

I don't think anyone has a problem with making the case against. Is there anyone that can reasonably make the case for? If not, then he has to go.

I posted this in another thread, but this is the case against Matt House:
Coming into the season, House said his focus was forcing more turnovers and getting off the field on third down.
Results?
Turnovers - 101 in the country
3rd down conversion rate - 116 in the country
I also can't get past him entirely scraping the defensive plan after game one each of the last two seasons. While it shows he's not stubborn, it makes me believe he's not exactly sure what he wants to do on defense. No identity.
