That Texas team can make a claim, I suppose. It's all conjecture anyway but at the time it was definitely one of the 5 greatest seasons by a CFB team.

Largely because the media kept talking up how invincible USC was. Texas was a damn good team, but that game was so hyped up by the media that it was ridiculous. When Texas won, there was a lot of "the best team didn't win" talk going on by talking heads and the media who were dick riding Pete Carroll and USC.

Ok. Kinda hard to make an argument about two undefeated championship teams who played a decade and a half apart.

Ask Texas fans if they'd rather have Vince Young or Joe Burrow represent their school

The hyperbole was nuts but that was a damn good SC team. Texas had to beat a good OSU team in Columbus as well. I remember the rest of the schedule not being that good-OU was down- but they could score points and all their DBU bullshite came out of this era.

I'm not a huge fan of all things Texas but credit where credit is due. And I do think LSU's season and overall talent level is superior to that Texas team

No way, you mean Texas fans think their legendary NC team with their legendary QB was better than someone else’s team? Holy shite that’s shocking

Offensively this LSU team was the best I've seen.
It's a different era.
The 2011 LSU defense was lights out.
The 2019 LSU defense was not as good as 2011 but they didn't have to be and injuries and style of offense played a factor. When the 2019 defense needed to stop someone though, they usually did.

Shouldn't Oklahoma be somewhere on that list as well?

Let's stop doing comparisons like this. It's safe to say that 2019 LSU would beat everyone.

for a few years there, USC came out highly ranked (undeservedly) in the preseason polls. It was kind of ridiculous.

Man Vince Young almost singlehandedly won that game for Texas. You could argue that USC team had more talent on it collectively.

2005 Texas was a special season but 2019 LSU is without a doubt more impressive. The championship game that year was definitely more competitive and exciting to the masses compared to ours this year. We're in a different, more difficult, era of CFB. There are more teams recruiting at elite levels creating a larger volume of exciting regular season high ranking matchups like we saw this year.
