With the new hire at DC our defense took a big step towards being the smash mouth defense we were used to. No more of the set back and wait shite. This type of play will make every position improve. We have a few freshmen that will come right in an compete for a lot of playing time.
Our Oline will be fine. I am not worried about it. I hope they do change some things up and finally open the offense up a bit or it won't matter who we have on the line it will be another 2 or 3 loss season.

Also, Hawkins is only a serviceable tackle at LSU's level.
He had to go pro, because he was likely going to get beat out for his starting spot next year if he stayed. We are upgrading his position next year.
As for Vadal, it's a tale of two tackles. He was a dominate (that's just for SFP) run blocker, but very mediocre in pass protection. I see a small overall decline in the quality of his replacement. The three returning starters will be better. Overall, the OL should be a little bit better next year than this one. But the bigger factor is getting a healthy Dillon Gordon and J. D. Moore back to wreck stuff.

I can't tell you that

And that equals 78% wins. GFY. I agree we need more creativity for the big games and that Miles has to consider other tactics to sec west games. This year we started a true SO QB, two FR lineman in O and it showed. I look forward to 2016 with a new DC and great incoming class with seasoned vets.

And that's not so much that they recruit worlds better than us. We recruit just about as well as them--where we should be competing mostly even with them.
Wow, did you really just write that? We recruit as well as Bama? Why then did we start a sophomore at QB? Why are we running out of linebackers? Why was our dline so young the last two years?
Man, we DO NOT recruit as well as Bama. Leaving aside the fact that their classes outrank every single one of our classes, they recruit EVERY position group evenly EVERY year.

I think that the lines will be very good. Probably the second best in the sec. But where I worry is what is right behind this lines on o and d.
QB is a gigantic question and miles has no proof that he can develop a QB.
LB is paper thin even if Beckwith decides to return

We recruit just as well as Bama. We have more players in the NFL to prove that. The QB play has mostly to do with the outcome of the games.

And all they do is fricking reload and play for national championships while we lose our 3-5 games and play in small-time bowls.
they have a lot more depth and are much deeper in top level talent

But hey, part of "reloading" every season starts at the top. That's the biggest difference between the two programs.
no, it starts with recruiting and that's the biggest difference between the two programs. We seem to be doing pretty well this year and a couple years ago we pulled in top level class. But they do a lot better in recruiting especially the big guys in the trenches. Sabans on a whole other level in recruiting but Miles and crew putting in the work to close the gap.

biggest difference is in the trenches and LB's. Skill positions (other than QB) we match up pretty well with them and at times even better. Numbers don't lie, they've had the #1 ranked rivals class for about 8 straight years now, while our best showing was a #2 rank two years ago. Going back the last 4 years we've had the #8, #2, #6, and #18 rivals classes. Plus generally their #1 classes aren't just a little better than the #2, they are #1 by a big margin.

Coaching hires and recruiting is great, but the turnaround we seek starts at the LOS. Will LSU be able to hold it's own against the big boys this season? What will change?
You do realize these two things are/were part of the problem right? We already bring back the entire two deep on DL and are loading up on beasts that can get in the rotation immediately. Ed O in his second year will show a world of difference to where we were just 2-3 years ago.
On OL the fact of the matter is our OL unit was/is just young. When guys went down this year, we replaced them mostly with true freshman Weathersby and redshirt freshman Brumfield. Yes guys like Boutte and Malone got in a bit, but at some points you had 3 freshman on the line at the same time (two of them being true freshman). In 2016, the best players on it outside of Pocic, will be from the 2014, 2015, and 2016 classes. All Jeff Grimes's boys. I expect LSU to be better next year and even better in 2017 when every starter should be a junior or senior.

We had good DL play this season and return everyone for 2016, it's only going to get better with:
Neal - Godchaux - LaCouture - Key
Bower - Herron - Gilmore - Washington
As a rotation with some really talented freshmen in the mix which we didnt have this year with guys like Lawrence, Alexander, Logan, Christmas-Giles, Roddy and Anthony.
DL should be as good as anyone's.
As for the OL, returning 3 guys is key. Pocic can replace one of the bookends and we can easily have someone else step inside with the plethora of guys we have in reserve right now.

What a huge gaping pussy.
I don't know about the offensive line but the defense will be monstrous. I just hope they are better in pass protection.

Last year 10 of starting 22 were 1st or 2nd year players by the AL game. I expect that number to be half at most if Smith and a freshman linebacker wind up starting. It will be a much more experienced team. In 11 seasons, Miles has started 4 2nd year qb's, 2008, 2009, 2014 & 2015. Arguably these have been his worst teams. With a starting qb in his 3rd year or farther, Miles is 5-3 against AL. He's 0-4 with a 2nd year starter.

The only group on offense that is of some concern id QB. BH will have surgery and hopefully reflect that in his play.
LB is the only group on D that is suspect and if Beckwith returns then we are set!

That hasn't been the case on the lines for a while, at least until recently. There was a BIG drop off in both quantity and quality of recruits on both lines after 2011. Grimes has been addressing this on the O Line for 2 years, and this coming season is when his work should finally take root. The defensive front 7 got a later start, but we are finally seeing Coach O's work take hold there.
However, make no mistake. LSU has NOT been even with Bama where it matters for 3-4 years.

why Clemson or Alabama lost a lot and didn't take any steps back.
Actually, Bama's offensive line struggled pretty badly early on this year. They obviously came around, but they had trouble running the ball against good teams early in the season.
LSU has recruited well enough on the O Line the last two years that they should be able to reload the same way from this point on.
