Any time there's a band thread people just shite around and shoot the breeze for a bunch of pages.

For any of you current or former band members, did you have marching band experience in high school before going to LSU? I thought about trying out despite zero experience. I had 2.5 yrs of private drum lessons (1 hr/week), splitting time between learning the snare drum & playing the entire drumset.
A buddy of mine in the dorm kept encouraging me to audition. I never bothered, figuring I had little chance of learning to play w/ the tradition grip on the sticks which was required. (I learned to play overhand w/ both hands.) I also intimidated by learning to play in moving formations after only sitting in front of a set.
I still regret trying out. At least I didn't miss any great moments as a band member since I was there during the Hallman era (or is it error?) I was able to slip out of the stadium before the end of the 3rd qtr in so many horrible beatings, unlike the band.

Under Swor, we counted to 8, 12, 16 and sometimes some other numbers we made up on the fly.

She said the band is taught to count "1..2..3..4.." once they started playing otherwise if they listened to the crowd they would all get lost and be playing out of unison.
They have no idea how much time is spent on teaching that to the freshmen the week before registration.

The ones who went to high school in Alabama can usually only get to 2

is the OP for real? As now an aspiring professional trumpet player, I guess I take a lot of these experiences for granted...meh whatever. BTW, Tiger Band has always sounded like a mediocre marching band. Some years a little better, some years a little worse.
Haters gonna hate.

Yeah. Experience isn't entirely needed though. One of the harder things is learning how to peak-step properly, and we only ever roll-stepped in high school.
The drumline is one of the hardest sections to get into though.

Only the Alabama high school valedictorian have reached that high level of achievement.

Which corps are you watching? The good ones are mind-blowing. I don't know what YOU'RE looking at.

Actually....not really. This year one guy actually marched with the corps who won the DCI championship and he seemed to act like anyone else.

Yah ginger I'm so mad! I've been to 3 DCI shows. What they do is impressive but it's just not for me. I think it's boring as frick. And when I was in TGBFTL there were kids from Cavaliers and Cadets and all of them just acted like they were the shite
