Are we discussing punt returner, or wide receiver?

Stingley doesn't have a problem catching the ball. Palmer does.

Last I checked actually catching the ball was a pretty big part of being a wide receiver.

And if anything he would be good with 50/50 balls.

He had more than just 2-3 like you said. He averaged 1 return a game and almost 10 yards. I distinctly remember him coming damn close to breaking a few. The kid is smooth

I'm good with this if it is what Stingley wants.
But I don't think it is wise.
Stingley is the most important player on the defense and I suspect his objective is to increase his value as an NFL CB.
Being a Heisman candidate is flattering and could help his endorsement value, but unless this TEAM is a lot better than it was last year, nobody is gonna be talking about Stingley as a Heisman candidate, no matter what....

Until somebody steps up big time, right now Boutte is the only current WR that would have been on the field back in 2019.

Name all the other receivers that would have been on our field in 2019?

I’m talking about as a playmaker. He’s not elite enough in space to make it a worthy endeavor. That being said, im sure this was a recruiting promise that needs to be fulfilled.

Dude is a baller, would be great on jump balls and has great hands. He didn’t get a lot of opportunity as a PR because our offense was so electric in ‘19, he had to be conservative. He’s a dog, which is why I think he can succeed. Should he be playing offense… idk. Would it be fun to watch? Yes absolutely.

Definitely could see him going up for jump balls in the red zone. He wins almost every time in that scenario I think.

He had opportunities, just looked like he was hesitant to take off and return it.

Give him a few touches.. end-arounds, screen. Maybe 5-10 total on the season

But use him as a decoy and f*ck it let him throw on a trick play

See that's two different things.

I agree with you that it isn't a worthy endeavor. But the question was if he would make a better wide receiver than LSU 2-3.

If LSU still had a WRs like Marshall, Chase, and Jefferson, the answer is clearly no.

But besides Boutte, can you confidently said that anyone else is a better WR than what Stingley would be?

The biggest news to break during the radio shows was when Orgeron told WWL’s Hebert and Detillier that Derek Stingley, Jr. will get some looks on offense during fall camp. Orgeron had promised Derek Stingley, Sr. that he would play his son only on defense for the first two years. Now that Stingley, Jr. is in his third year and everyone is on board with the idea, they’re ready to see what LSU’s No. 7 can do with the ball in his hands.

Meh - he's had plenty of chances to show something if he's special at it and really hasn't. He's not bad at it by any means, but he's not elite either. He hasn't been one of those returners that makes something out of nothing.

I think he's still back there because he's got such great hands and given a wide open lane he could make them pay, which I'm ok with.

ETA:

23 punt returns for 11.3 average. Pretty good.

Maybe this year, fully healthy, and with more experience, he'll crush it. If he returns a couple touchdowns, catches a couple touchdowns, and locks down his side of the field on defense, he's in New York.

He played some qb in high school actually as a way to throw teams off of Mike Williams.

As good as Stingley is, I don’t see the Percy Harvin in him to play O.

I still can’t believe he hasn’t housed a punt. I thought he was going to be one of the best returners in our history

Stingley on offense

I don't think Stingley sees the field on offense more than a few plays, if any, all season.

When you push stuff like that because you want it to happen it usually doesn’t work. It just has to come naturally
