This. What an arrogant prick Saban was/is.

It would have been like Florida hiring Meyer out of Bowling Green

Or Saban out of MSU.
Or Miles out of OSU.

Arnsparger suggested Archer instead of Spurrier who allegedly wanted the job.

After Arnspager left LSU to become AD at Florida, who did he hire as HC?

quote:

In 1989, Arnsparger's new school became embroiled in a series of controversies when it was revealed that head football coach Galen Hall had committed NCAA violations and that two players on his team had admitted gambling on college football games. In addition, questions about the school's men's basketball program also surfaced, allegations that led to the forced resignation of Gators basketball coach Norm Sloan.

Despite seeing both teams put on NCAA probation, Arnsparger was able to extricate himself from the football problem by hiring Steve Spurrier, then the Duke University head coach and the Gators' Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback in 1966. The appointment set the stage for one of the most successful runs for a program during the 1990s.

Negative. Bowling Green and a sh*tty USFL team =\= Michigan State and Oklahoma State coaching experience.

Shitty USFL team? This wasn't the XFL or other weak attempts at competing with the NFL; the USFL was for real for it's brief existence.

Jim Mora was another coach from that league, as was June Jones/Mouse Davis. Those guys could coach, and you could see that at the time.

Why......Bill Arnsbarger left LSU as head coach to go to Florida as AD and he suggested we hire his assistant Bill Archer to replace him....guess what......we did!!!

I don't think Arnsbarger recommended anyone, the players threatened to quit if they didn't give the job to Archer. And I hope players are never allowed to get involved in coaching selections again.

Still can't believe Saban went for 50+ yard field Goals.

Especially without a consistent kicker who could make those kicks

Uhhh, Saban had been defensive coordinator from the Cleveland Browns. Not like he was a nobody noone had heard of. People in coaching circles knew he was a real coach.

at the time, it seemed like a good idea.

Nutt brought instant success to three programs before Ole Miss.

Boise (which built on the success and is now a household word)
Murray State (where he is still regarded as the be-all, end-all.)
Arkansas (came close immediately. )

therefore, based on his track record and success in the actual SEC, it was a reasonable idea.

At the time Miles was the pick, I was not at all pleased
as I had seen the way his Ok State team had been beat by Tex, which was down a zillion at the half and stormed back, and beat by the Okies, who were also down a zillion and also stormed back.
I watched both those games.
I watch way too much football, I know.

I'm not really too impressed with how much Saban cared for LSU while he was here.. After every win, he'd appear on tv saying his future was uncertain, if an offer came along he'd have to entertain it, etc.. The man had this great University to coach at, a great football team, the most enthusiastic fans in the country and was well placed in town.. and he kept throwing it back in our face.

Sorry had to get that off my chest.

Miles' last game at Okie State he got drilled by Ohio State in some non-essential bowl game.

I was not pleased with the hire either.

He wanted LSU to fail. Not hard to believe as that is pretty standard for a narcisist ego maniac.

A few above average coaches. The USFL wasn't where you went to look for a top flight coach.

Look - I'm not defending the Archer hire. I'm just trying to show that - without the benefit of hindsight - there wasn't a slam dunk candidate to replace Arnsparger.

He was in serious discussions about an NFL job after EVERY year, except maybe 2000. I don't remember the order, but it was Jets, Bears, Browns and finally the Dolphins got him.

He got his wish, his dream job and he quit on it after 2 years. That's a MAN right there.
