No one is celebrating losing the last two games to So Miss. But you have to be one particularly miserable pessimist if you can’t celebrate what they did in the first two games.

In the past 10 postseasons, 5 of them ended to Stony Brook (at home), Houston (at home with a home super regional pending), Coastal Carolina (at home), 3 seed Florida State (at home), and Southern Miss (with a home super regional pending). We were the favorite in all 5. That's the difference between potentially 8 trips to Omaha in 10 years or 3. I'm not sure if that's good or bad. We definitely seem to be coming up short in favorable spots in the postseason very frequently.

It's his decision making that is alarming. I mean the whole start Dutton for one batter thing, attempting to steal Bianco when baserunners were non existent instead of laying a bunt down, taking Hilliard out prematurely after he had settled in, taking Gervais out prematurely after he had settled in..etc ETC ETC

I'm not sure if you just started watching in the regional but CJJ's pitching decision making has been masterful all year. He and coach Kelly are the reason a staff with no real starters was able to finish in the top half of the SEC in ERA.

You can criticize his ability to coach fielding if you'd like but what he was able to get out of that pitching staff was nothing short of amazing.

You can't put the past coach's failures on the new coach.

In 1 season, CJJ was on the verge of hosting and 1 run away from the Supers. All of this without any starting pitchers, a SS that is allergic to ground balls, and a catcher who had spent his whole college career as a DH. No doubt in my mind that when he gets a chance to put a full team together (next year hopefully), that we will be going to Omaha regularly again.

Not trolling son it's to get you snowflakes to see the reality. We aren't a powerhouse like we use to be but we can be.

LSU baseball is a bit like ND football in that each had a run where they dominated the sport. But as the landscape of the sport changed it allowed other programs to achieve success. Many LSU fans, like many ND fans, unrealistically feel LSU should be able to return to dominating the sport and anything less is unacceptable. The reality is both program can, and should, still be very, very good. But the 90's era dominance for LSU isn't coming back.

You have to wonder where we are as a program when we are celebrating coming from behind to beat two mediocre teams in a regional that we were not good enough to host??? I love LSU but sometimes the truth hurts. Way to much talent to lose so many games.
Umm, this is why there was a push to replace Paul Mainieri (and Les Miles). Had tenure and the skins on the wall, but the program had become stale and a shadow of what it was, what it could and should be.

Mainieri had the grace to go out in retirement, but I'm pretty confident that Miles had been offered that choice and declined, and that Mainieri was not far away from being squeezed out the same way Miles was.
When this happens, you are usually going to see a year or two of growing pains.

LSU was fortunate to keep enough bats to make a regional, but we didn't have a single pitcher you would call a weekend starter. It's college, those guys will come and go, and we WILL have them again. But as of this year, we didn't have them.
In the big picture, this year was a success. Johnson showed he can run this program well enough to make a regional final, without a single ace. That will help recruit future classes, if we can get some we're almost certain to become a national seed again.

If we bring in enough players, there's no reason to think we can't push Tennessee out of the top spot. A&M is also in that same position, but I think LSU has a bigger draw. People needed to see if Johnson could handle the gig, and he showed he could.

You are absolutely correct, and this should be concerning. Somehow, people started talking about our lack of pitching talent and that just continued to get repeated without giving any thought to whether it was true or not.

When you look at our arms, there is some natural talent there. Floyd is a top 100 guy out of high school. Lansville is a top 100 guy out of high school. Money is a top 150 guy out of high school. Grant Taylor is a top 150 guy out of high school. Reyzleman and Cooper were both highly coveted arms in the transfer portal. Gervase is a guy with arm talent.

Do we have a Gausman or Nola or Lange on this staff? No, not even close. But we had enough arms to work with to field a competent weekend rotation. That fact that we couldnt do that is a bit concerning.

I am not saying we don't have the arm talent but I see teams with far less talent that have pitchers who can pitch. They have 3 pitches and can work both sides of the plate.
