re: Sports Illustrated gets it (this time at least)

I agree with the folks saying it will play out but the rankings released last night indicate to me that the CFP committee is a horrible horrible group of people. Contradictions abound in their selection of Bama at #4.
Posted on 11/4/15 at 9:56 am to tlsu15
I personally think it's premature to put Bama in the top four. However things will workout. Bama wins this weekend they deserve their spot. If they lose they are done.
Lots of shifting around between now and the end of the year.
The only time to be upset with this poll is the last one if your team gets bounced.

It really is. This "eyeball-test" BS is going to piss off the entire nation at some point, probably sooner than later.
Giving Bama a pass on their loss to OM because they pass the "eyeball test" is about as asinine as a hypothetical committee crowning USC the 2005 national champions because "well yeah Texas beat them, but it was only by 3 points. And they didn't have Reggie Bush in the game on 4th and 1. If they did, they probably would've gotten the first down and won the game. We just feel like they're still the best team."
The committee concept survived year 1 because the problem wasn't the inclusion of an undeserving team. It was that there was more than 4 deserving teams. I can't imagine what the revolt will look like when a team that is perceived by the country at large to be undeserving is selected.

I feel like this has been our responsibility for almost 5 years now. When the country needs a Bama loss in November, they turn to us and say "Please LSU, you're our only hope"

Does that message come out of R2-D2?

Agreed. But let's be honest - Bama would probably be at least a 7-point favorite over Florida in a head to head.

why would you spend so much time and energy over something so trivial....there is still a lot of football to play

Regarding the thought that we just need to win Saturday...
Yes but I would also add the qualifier.. We need to win convincingly...
If we win by a narrow margin, on a questionable call or lack thereof...
Bama I think will continue to get a great deal of favor from the selection committee...

fricking THIS

With that in mind, consider where Zac Ellis went to college when determining his unbiased opinion of Bama.
bamasgot - it doesn't matter about all that crap that you are spewing. Fact is from Bama's record they don't deserve to be in the top 4 "as of today." You have to get penalized for losing "especially at home" and you guys didn't. You see just about every SEC fan, I will bet including you, says it is hard winning SEC games on the road. So if that is truly the case the winning road team has to get more credit and the losing home team has to be dinged just that little extra. You guys were not dinged at all.
You cannot sit there and say that ur loss was better than Florida's loss, because it was not. You both have the same records and yet you lost to Ole Piss at home and Florida beat Ole Piss! There is NO WAY IN HELL you should be ranked above Florida right now especially with the games to be played going forward. The committee truly did itself an injustice. They should have let the schedule work this issue out for itself then project that Bama is a top 4 team! If Bama beats LSU this weekend then the committee could rationale say "Bama beat LSU, you lost to LSU so Bama is better than Florida" but to say that Bama is better than Florida right now with Bama losing at home to Ole Piss and Florida beating the crap out of Ole Piss. It is just plain bias bullshite!
I can promise you one thing if the roles were reversed with Florida right now Bama and every gump "including you" would be screaming bloody murder!!! It is literally that simple to analyze!!!!

You are attempting to apply transitive property to college football. Doesn't work that way. For every example you can provide of Team A beat Team B and team B beat team C so Team A is better than Team C, there are an equal number of examples that show it doesn't apply - not just with wins/losses, but also margin of victory.
LSU beat Syracuse by 10. USF beat Syracuse by 21. Does that mean that USF is better than Syracuse? Florida beat UK by 5. Florida beat Tennessee by 1. By transitive property logic the UT/UK game should have been close. it was anything but close as UT killed UK.
MSU lost to LSU by 2. They lost to A&M by 13. Do you think that A&M is going to be favored over LSU? Nope. Oddities happen in college football. Sometimes a team loses a game they shouldn't lose (see USCw losing to Stanford when they were a 44 point favorite). Doesn't mean the team that lost is incapable of beating the same team or winning out.

Is all of that true?
Yes. Ritter has zero connection to Bama. He did grow up in Texas. He did attend Rice. His daughter does not attend Bama. I'm not even sure where all of this false narrative started.
Fact is, the SEC will not let official work games that include their alma mater. In fact, the rule is really specific and protective in more ways:
SEC careful to prevent officials with any connections to a school from officiating a game involving that school
quote:
The SEC will screen medical observers the same way as they do officials. That means an observer can’t work a game involving their alma mater, if they have family connections to a school, if they have financial interest related to the school, or if they played for or with a team’s head coach.

This. They know these rankings mean nothing so why not hype the games. It has everyone talking so they did their job.

bama is in the top 4 because the SEC Network is a $3 billion a year business with ties to ABC and ESPN. bama is the SEC Network's flagship product. Like it or not, in ESPN and ABC's minds when they mention bama, they're really just promoting their $3B business. Money doesn't talk, it SCREAMS.
