Sports Illustrated - How Good Can LSU Be With Burrow?

But here’s the thing. Canada’s offense didn’t exactly set the SEC on fire, and LSU still won nine games in 2017. The 2018 schedule, which opens with Miami in Arlington, Texas, and includes an SEC East crossover visit from Georgia, is pretty rugged. The popular assumption in SEC country is that Orgeron’s decision to part ways with Canada and promote Steve Ensminger—who served as LSU’s interim offensive coordinator in 2016—will combine with the difficulty of the schedule and spell doom for Orgeron’s tenure.
I’m not so sure about that.
LSU probably will be better on both lines of scrimmage this season. Several young offensive linemen (most notably tackle Saahdiq Charles) had to play earlier than expected to fill holes caused by injuries last year. On the defensive line, LSU should be considerably deeper despite losing three senior starters. Early last season, the Tigers had no rotation of which to speak. That will change this season with an infusion of young players combined with veterans such as Rashard Lawrence and Texas Tech transfer Breiden Fehoko.
The lack of D lineman was to me was the biggest reason we lost to Troy. It was not the purported meddling. Deondre Clark played most of that game, probably more than he played his entire LSU career. True freshman Nick Farrell played considerable time, too.

The receiver group should be deeper, too. That likely will be what Tigers coaches try to sell to Burrow, who lost out to Dwayne Haskins for the starting job in Columbus. Texas Tech transfer Jonathan Giles should be a top target, and Justin Jefferson showed this spring that he’s capable of being a lot more than just a jet sweep specialist. The big question is who will carry the load at tailback, which is something no one has had to ask in Baton Rouge for a long time. Clyde Edwards-Helaire probably will take the bulk of the carries, but he doesn’t come into the role with prior experience as a trusted No. 2 back like so many of his predecessors did.
LSU has three quarterbacks (Myles Brennan, Lowell Narcisse and Justin McMillan) currently competing for the starting job, but no one distanced himself from the others in the spring. In fact, the trio only muddied the picture further. That’s why LSU is interested in Burrow, and judging by the permission to contact letter crafted by Ohio State—which included only LSU and Cincinnati—that interest is mutual.
What’s interesting about Burrow and LSU is that if Burrow is as good as his Ohio State teammates say he is, he could conceivably elevate a program that has lacked dynamic quarterback play since Zach Mettenberger left following the 2013 season. Let’s say LSU is basically the same level of team it was last year. Now add a good quarterback. That’s a team that—even with this schedule—could equal or surpass last year’s win total.

lets just get him on the team

If we can't beat Troy with fewer DL at LSU, then we are beyond fricked.
That's a valid argument when we're in the meat of the SEC schedule, not when we're paying a team from the CUSA nearly a million dollars to fly in to take their arse beating on homecoming.

I don't know man, getting shut out until the 4-minute mark of the 3rd quarter at home against Troy was pretty significant in the loss. The D-line issues didn't help, but the lack of any offense and scoring gave Troy more hope as the game went on and wore our defense down.

I'm honestly not convinced this kid will make that much of a difference. Sure, we'll have a decent QB, but that doesn't change who's calling the plays.
Even IF Ensminger were a trusted play caller, you still have no proven running game. It'll just be the reverse of what teams have done to LSU since 2013. Key on the pass and let the occasional run get by. This offense, even with a good QB, doesn't look like it can be balanced. That is a problem when you don't have a QB that can run AND throw.

We lost to Troy because O got involved in the offense and we scored 0 first half points.

A better QB will absolutely make a difference.

We lost two starters
And not only deeper, but better overall. Fehoko replacing Lacouture is a huge upgrade and a healthy Alexander should be better than Gilmore.
I'm looking forward to seeing this defensive front seven in action.

It goes hand in hand, we couldn't get them off the field. They were blowing our D line 5 yards back and just grinding out 1st down after 1st down.
That puts pressure on the offense and limits the opportunities to put together a drive.
Anyway, reasonable outlook from Staples.

True, but letting Chum rush for 190yards didn't help. We didn't get many possessions because we couldn't get the ball back.

He was the composite number 8 ranked dual threat QB on 247 coming out of high school.
He threw for over 11,400 yards in high school.
You were saying?

If we get a veteran, talented QB that has been coached up by Urban Meyer, paired with this defense, and can't win 10 games, its time for O to go.

this is BIG for coach o's future imo.

He might not make that big of a difference but having him sure as hell won't hurt! This fan base is starving for a capable qb and if Burrow is as good as some think he is then he would become a legend here.

We didn’t play the game with fewer DL, we played the game with scout team members getting considerable snaps - and it showed.

That is false.
You are either wrong or lying, hopefully the latter because at least you know the truth and aren’t simply clueless.

Watch the film or look at the tackles in the box score.
