It seems to be the consensus that Southern's band performed more entertainingly than LSU's though some say LSU's playing was technically better.

I don't see a lot of marching bands as they don't usually show them on TV much, but I thought the part of LSU's performance where it looked like a couple dancing (starting at 10:25) was one of the coolest looking things I have seen a marching band do.

No one cares about technique except band nerds…everyone else wants to be entertained

Both bands were very good. The part where TGBFTL did the dancers dip that you mentioned was really cool.
A lot of posters here will say the band sucked, but a lot of the posters here are miserable people.

I’d rather watch the Tiger Girls and Golden Girls dance than a bunch of band members.

Louder - that’s what Southern has. They’re loud.

Now they’re ability to display the score that quickly on the field is impressive.
Although not sure why you ever display the score to a game when you are losing.

LSU would have gotten louder cheers if they had played some hit songs that everybody knew. They still could have done their cute dancing stuff.

And this is a myth. Listen to the current tgbftl play Touchdown for LSU and other traditional songs. There are shortcuts all over the place from the way the songs are written because the current band can’t handle the note progressions. They sound like a middle school band compared to Tiger Band in its prime under Wickes.

And no, I’m not talking about volume. I’m talking about musicianship. TGBFTL was arguably the best college marching band in the country 20 years ago. They devolved from that to being pretty good, but no comparison to Ohio State, etc.

Then they went to mediocre for a few years and now are just plain bad. We are going on what? The fifth year or so with a director who was supposed to be a one year interim? His only previous directing experience before being promoted to Director of Bands at LSU was directing a high school band.

That “nationwide search” for a nationally renowned band director got scrapped by King Alexander and Tate apparently has no interest in resurrecting it.

That was pretty incredible. Too bad it’s not appreciated by the “Play dah neck” crowd. Maybe if the band would have formed a person farting or a pole dancer it would have gotten their attention.

They started editing those songs because the student body had made-up offensive chants to go along with certain sections…and that editing began during the Wickes era.

Agree, these kids work their asses off to preform. My daughter was a Golden Girl and they practice with Tiger band ,sometimes till 9-10 pm on school nights. Southern's band does the same . Enjoy and applaud these kids for doing something that most of us couldn't do!

It's two philosophies of how to approach a marching band. What LSU does is the more traditional marching band type performance. More precise and technical, the type of thing that wins competitions of that sort.

What Southern and many of the HBCUs do is much more entertaining but it is difficult to be precise in the way traditional marching bands are.

From a musicianship point of view, that is a much harder question. It is like comparing orchestra musicians vs jazz musicians. Both are generally amongst the best on their instruments.

This is from a non band nerd and complete non musician.

I will say the halftime show was entertaining.

LSU doing a Latin theme during a game between two Baton Rouge teams was as dumb and out of touch with reality as you can possibly get. Anyone in the chain of the command that chose the theme and approved the theme should be looking for new jobs. The decision making was that poor.

Well stated. No matter what is discussed here there has to be those who find negative angles. If you enjoy the bands then do so. If you don't go take a shite at halftime and let those who enjoy it do so.

What theme should the theme have been that would provide a theme that is acceptable?

I get what you’re saying, but brass and drums are the essence of modern marching bands. Some don’t even bother with woodwinds (clarinet, sax, flute) at all anymore. Latin music is a great way to showcase your brass and drums, so from the vantage point of “bringing it” for the other band that’s supposed to be all that, it makes sense.

Absolutely true. Weak Brass. Too many useless Woods. It doesn't really matter though. Just entertain me for 10 minutes before the PIM starts blasting again!

Did anyone watch the “5th Quarter” between the bands?? It was fantastic! LSU really showed up and showed out! Southern’s sound is just unbelievable tho. Sorry, I have no link to share.

Where have you been the last 20 years? TGBFTL always has some dumbass halftime show theme. We’e had “Songs from the Caribbean” before so “New Age Latin” wasn’t the least bit surprising.
