Some interesting Sam Leavitt analytics

Posted on the Score Board, but it was locked minutes later.
1) His completion percentage is listed as 61.3% for this year thus far; however, his adjusted completion percentage (completions + drops / on target passes) is 76.1%
2) On target passes dropped by the receiver is 10 so far this year (14.9% drop rate). That statistic for him in 2025 & 2024 was 11 & 20 respectively (understanding he did miss games last year).
Points 1 & 2 above is a combination of 2 issue in my opinion. The first being, our receivers aren't getting separation and aren't making the super tough catches that are "not great passes, but should still be caught". The second being, Leavitt's passes that are "catchable" could easily be fixed by improving accuracy ever so slightly. He seems off by a inches on some of these throws (see missed TD pass at the end of the game last night, see the first interception in the Clemson game, etc...)
3) Batted passes at the LOS so far this year is 4. He had 5 & 4 total for the 2025 & 2024 seasons respectively.
Lane and this staff have to figure out how to remedy this. It's happening way too often and will (and potentially has already) cost us down the road.
4) He's been sacked 8 times this year. He was sacked 20 & 19 times for 2025 & 2024 respectively.
5) His time to throw (3.04) is on par with both season at Arizona State.
6) He has 16 non-designed scrambles. He had 28 & 51 for 2025 & 2024 respectively
I know the offensive line can play better, but it seems he is the common denominator in his sack/scramble issues.
And for what it's worth, his time to throw was rated at 3.35 versus Ole Miss. For reference it was 2.82 and 2.97 against Clemson and Tech respectively.

This can’t be an accurate number

An insider on another site says he’s incapable of getting past his first read. That’s terrifying

If he can’t make a simple throw to a wide open receiver 10 yards down the field in the end zone, which he did twice last night, then he’s not a very good quarterback.
He likely cost us the game along with Blake Baker’s sorry arse defensive scheme planning.

He hit that DL square in the face last night. That should not be considered a tipped ball

He's white Jordan Jefferson. He isn't the answer

Completely agree. The pass to 44 was a miss by Leavitt.
The earlier pass that was high, did hit the receiver in both hands. Leavitt needs to make a better throw and the receiver needs to catch that considering how much both of them are being paid.
Baker is 80% of the reason we lost last night in my opinion. His fear to call an aggressive game and insistence to overly respect Chambliss got us torched. I put zero of this defensive performance on the players.

This board is so funny. People fall into two camps:
1. Always simp for starting QB no matter what
2. Always overhype backup QB at the first sign of trouble, no matter what
Leavitt is inaccurate. Stop trying to make excuses. Stop trying to sugarcoat it.
He makes an amazing throw about once or twice per game, but he misses wide open dudes more often than that.
I do think Clark will challenge him for PT before the end of the season, and you can find me saying that prior to the game last night.
A lot of you are in denial.

Batted down and tipped must be completely different then. He’s had at least 10 passes hit by the DL that didn’t make it to the receiver

I think you'll find my post history isn't covering for Leavitt. It's quite the opposite. I was just posting the actual stats / analytics for his first 3 LSU games.

Completely agree. His deep ball isn't great, but how many times have our receivers gotten separation down field? JJ and Chase aren't running routes for this team. Every deep ball he's thrown, the receivers are covered and would require a perfect ball every time. I expect Leavitt to make these throws, but I don't expect tons of accurate shots down field if you never have a deep route open.

Nah, I'd like to see Clark get a shot to run this offense as it's evident Leavitt isn't improving on his bad habits. But at the same time, our receivers also have to be better when the opportunity is there. Even if that means making a few tough catches on throws that aren't perfect.

Of course the downvotes came.

My concerns but not huge because I know all are correctable.
1. There were times when Sam’s lack of height didn’t help him. The throwing lanes need to be maintained for a shorter QB and on Saturday they seemed to closed off which resulted in a tipped passes. As you all know, when a ball is tipped at the LOS, they can end up in picks and causes possession issues.
Same as the OP posted.
2. The timing routes such as back shoulder throws are not there yet probably due to a lack of chemistry. Because of this, he threw a few balls that looked like they would be picked if the DBs were any better. They will play better DBs.
This was better. Good sign
3. While they have a lot of playmakers at receiver, I noticed a lack of separation. Change and Jefferson were excellent at the LOS to get that first step where they elite route running could take over to give them separation.
Still haven’t seen this to a large extent.. gonna have to scheme this more.
4. Maybe there are some on the roster, it looks like there aren’t a lot of receivers outside of Green where you feel good about them going up and snatching a ball above a defender. Maybe they are all a little shorter???
5. I expected more passes above defenders to all Green to use his height and athletic ability to go get it above defenders.
Tough loss here. Why Wright was so important.
6. Not a true “concern”, just noticed this. There were a few breakdowns in coverages by the defense that will be exploited by a better QB.

This is really important. We don't have receivers that get a lot of separation, nor can they compensate by being a play maker.
Leavitt doesn't help with his average at best deep ball.
Lane needs to scheme around this to help create open space. If not, we won't see many deep explosive plays.

The good news is before he takes off to run he occasionally looks at his first read.

Remember he was Kiffins 3rd choice behind Williams and Sorsby and he didn't become a priority until the portal started to dry up. I don't think Lane will refuse to bench him if he continues to refuse to go through his progressions

It’s not the lack of deep balls that kill me, it’s the panic misses like the one to 44 + being the anti-Brees when it comes to finding throwing lanes.
That interception to start the season is a perfect example of one where you can say it should have been caught, but I put that on the QB & he’s putting balls out there like that on a regular basis.
I agree we are already having depth issues as Wright was probably going to be our best deep threat & Green our best redzone receiver, but with Leavitt at times it feels like we are running glorified triple option.
Clark feels like he is just objectively more of a balanced dual threat. I realize he hasn’t shown that against starters, but accuracy and progressing through reads can be observed regardless of competition.
QB is not our only issue, but I’ve seen simple QB swaps transform teams before where people claimed the same thing.

I’m more troubled by this right now. They had receivers wide open all night and their O line dominated except for one series.

I feel like he gives up on his pocket a little too fast!
