It's childish. It's stupid. I wish they would penalize more than they do. Respect the game.

I agree. No one will answer the question of "What is the point - what is the purpose?" All the arguments against this are just whining... they don't want them to have any fun...just a bunch of old white conservatives with a stick up their arse...refs have too much power...it's BS....etc etc.

I thought the point was to score more points than the other team and win the game. If that's not fun enough for you then you have a personal problem of insecurity or narcissism that needs to be remedied.

I'm actually fine with restricting taunting but for frick's sake, who the hell is defining taunting for the NCAA, the Amish?

it's more about keeping the ref from making too much of a judgement call. If you're going to draw a line, draw it as broad as possible. It does suck that much of the fun is taken out of it...

I guess the Ref's missed the FL player's throat slash yesterday, that was one of the gestures that started this mess.

This! While I do agree that yesterday's call was completely out of line. College football players and NFL players should have to respect: theirselves, fans, other players, and past greats. Oh and not be "arse clowns"!

Apply this rule in any Disney sports movie/ karate kid etc and they would end before they started. They're all about the underdog, class act beating the showboating bada**es. Looks like they won't be getting any new material now.

To enjoy that moment of the game. To stay pumped up. To have fun. Whether you agree or not, fun is part of the game, or should be, at the collegiate or professional level.

For the record, I am focusing specifically on that one play by Wing. No "throat slash" moves, no pointing or mouthing off. Just threw out his arms in celebration and looked at the other team while in the field of play. If that move truly constituted "taunting" to you in any meaningful sense of the word, we have an epidemic of think skin around here.

Sure. After every score, calmly hand the ball to the official, walk stoically back to the bench (don't look up or sideways . . . could be misintepreted) and give a polite handshake to you teammates. Sit down and drink your Gatorade.

yeah. I would taunt my fellow sales reps when I had higher numbers then them. Guaranteed to get a talk from my bosses whether black white or purple young or old.

Meh, the two biggest calls of unsportsmanlike conduct I've seen was a white punter today and Jake Locker vs BYU.

The rules were put in place largely because of Miami in the late 80's early 90's and it was mostly black players taunting/celebrating.

No one would deny white players do it to, but stuff like what Wing did was not why the rules were put in place.

I've asked this same question, though I've asked it in reverse. What is the point of a rule that does not speak to any issue in regards to leveling the field of play? Why have a rule that is, at it's heart, designed so that fans don't get offended?

Personally, I never cared for the Deion Sanders/Terrel Owens type bullshite...but you know what? I don't matter. My feelings of being offended ought not to be taken into consideration when officials throw flags that can affect outcomes of games played on the field. This is an in-house issue as far as I'm concerned where individual coaches and university administrators can doll out punishments if they disapprove of that type of behavior. It ought not be handed down from on high.

I asked earlier...do you have any problems knowing that players are constantly cursing at one another on the field and you can't hear it? What about the visible taunt is worse than calling a guy out face to face with little or no visible show? Should we penalize foul language?
