I pretty much agree with you, unfortunately. And I'm an old white man. It's a dumb rule as it was applied today.

No. the the OP asked why is taunting considered bad? That's what I answered. Don't think what Wing did was a big deal.

I considered taunting bad in football right up until I witnessed the NFL and the NCAA try to do something about it.

NOW, I view taunting as the better alternative to rules against taunting.

I'd rather suffer thru 100 seasons of Jimmy Johnson Hurricane football than see these stupid assed rules applied.

It's kind of like when people taunt you for locking yourself in your bedroom.

Right... It's as if the officials are sorry there is so little ACTUAL taunting going on anymore so they have to call it occasionally. I mean...the rules on taunting were put into effect because there actually used to be REAL taunting! some bad, so not so bad. For every Deion Sanders showing has arse you've got high light reel footage of Walter Payton high stepping into the endzone.

With today's refs and stupid rules, Sweetness would be flagged.

I don't.

why is this such a terrible thing?
because it has nothing to do with true sports competition. the contest should be about who plays a better game, not the one who shows his arse. You want to celebrate for a good play or a score? Of course, there's nothing wrong with that. But what Brad Wing did today served NO purpose. However minute, or non-egregious it was, it was pointless. All he had to do was run into the endzone, high five his teammates, go to the sideline and celebrate to his heart's desire. But no, he had to look at the Florida players to try to egg them. It was his mistake. Ticky tack call? sure. Stupid rule? sure. But you know the rule, so don't break it. It's like driving 39 in a 35mph zone, then complaining after the cop pulls you over that it's a stupid law.

I just mentioned Walter Payton...you know, the guy the NFL has named it's Man of the Year award after. The guy who routinely high stepped his arse into end zones across the NFL for over a decade. In most cases, it was not in an attempt to evade a defender...it was just him showboating a bit.

The fact is, there is a line. The rule was put in place to curb the more outrageous stuff. the effect, unfortunately, has been to make referees daycare workers running up to players after nearly every play to tell them to stop jumping around and go back to their huddles. It's beyond ridiculous.

The next time a guy looks over at a bench and slashes across his throat, throw the flag. The next time a guy makes a huge hit and stand directly over a guy who's lying helpless on the ground, throw the flag. Hell...the next time a ball carrier turns around and holds out the ball as a defenders chases him and points it at him the way Emmit Smith used to do...throw the flag.

To suggest that what Wing did today rises to the level of what the spirit of that rule was originally intended to stop is total horseshite and aside from being an injustice to the game, it places WAY WAY too much power in the hands of the officiating crew who can, with the toss of a flag, take points off the board and claim there was a celebration...something which can;t be reviewed. You feel good going to Tuscaloosa with THAT being possible?

Should ask the players he taunted if their feelings were hurt. If they say, "yes, the punter greatly offended me today. He beat the whole team, he knew that we would be upset. As a player, when i have made a play that could help define a game and put away our opponent i could never imagine a premature celebration. i mean,...who are these people?"

then they can have their penalty.

For God's sake, let's not have any fun out there. We must maintain our sense of decorum.

If he had done something that was distasteful, malicious or trule taunting, that would be one thing. Wing's actions yesterday don't qualify. Oh yeah, God forbid you actually look at your opponent while scorching their arse for 50 yards.

Taunting is poor sportmanship and bush league. It's now a 15 yard penalty. I know now a days its popular to talk trash but in my opinion it's disrespecting your opponent. Winning isn't enough? Nobody is penalizing a reasonable degree of celebration so there is no reason for taunting. For the record I don't taunt family members or co-workers. I am no longer 8 years old.

You realize nobody believes you right? EVERYONE at some point pulls an "I told you so"... that's taunting.
