Some people had Reaves penciled in as the starting 3B last year when SEC play started.
I don’t know what they saw to be honest

The chrystal ball is missing, it seems. Players get evaluated on past performance and likely potential. It's a science but not a perfect one. Misses happen all the time and to every team.

Yep..Perfect game has missed on a lot of their ratings lately

No, you're not allowed to say this. The only reason we failed this season is because we didn't have enough NIL money to be good.

i know right?
And for the OP, the #1 JUCO recruit in the country last year, Tyler Myatt, out of Walters St in E Tennessee committed to Tennessee. He only started in 17 games, hit .247 on the season and had 3 HRs. This was after a JUCO season where he was the national JUCO POY and won the JUCO triple crown, hitting .484 w 31 HRs and 110 RBIs
I know it has to be fun for people to play Monday morning QB, but recruiting JUCO players isn't an exact science

They saw he hit .400 over 2 years in JUCO with ~30 HRs and almost a .500 OBP. He was a 1st team Juco AA. There were plenty of reasons people thought he was going to be good when he was signed.

But we didn’t have a 2nd baseman, competition makes people better, quit just giving people spots
We signed two players from the portal to compete for the second base position, both with better numbers last year in D1 than Tyson Leblanc had in JUCO. We also signed 2 freshmen. We had plenty of competition to fill the void at second. None of them panned out

I don't know him or his situation, but I'd be willing to bet he would've came here if LSU was interested regardless of whether or not SS was on the table.
We just watched a couple of freshmen who Jay didn’t push out leave for sure starting roles with good power conference teams. Why would a guy come here and wait a year to play the position he can start day one at somewhere else, especially if it’s his money year?
In an era where players can transfer at will, most won’t go somewhere to wait in line when they can go to another good or better program and start immediately at their favored position. The guy we’re talking about helped his draft stock by starting at SS when that would have never been a possibility here. He made the right decision for him and will make more in the draft because of it.
Should we have offered him in hindsight, even though his numbers weren’t overwhelming considering the stage- sure. Should he have come here- no.

called player evaluation, and quite frankly, JJ and staff failed miserably this past year.

people forget that reaves did hit 3 home runs in 2025
but he did regress this season a ton

Alot of these transfer kids were committed before we were done playing! Therefore we had to get kids who were considered best of the rest
Leblanc wasn’t a transfer. He wasn’t a portal player.
He graduated from LSU-E and signed with Kansas. When do JC kids sign? Earlier than portal guys, right?

Depending on their recruitment, guys that go D1 after their sophomore year may be signed by November of their sophomore year. It's just a whole different thing with JUCOs vs Portal. And even JUCOs vs HS.
It's one of the reasons I try to delineate them so much.

Exactly
Leblanc was probably signed way before all these portal guys.
Comparisons to them aren’t appropriate.

agree, and I don't think LSU is going to do that if it happens again. I like JJ, but he has something to prove, even though he has won Nattys. Maineri did also.
The guy with 2 nattys in 5 seasons “has something to prove”? What exactly is it that he has to prove to you? That he can bounce back and win another natty? He’s already done that.
A portion of this fanbase has gone full retard, and way too many of them post here.

The other thing to consider is that the hit rate on guys from LSUE isn't all that spectacular. We've managed to do pretty well with Catchers from there (hope we grab another one this year or next), but for a long time (including Leblanc's whole tenure there) they played a bad schedule and put up video game numbers. And then guys would wilt at the next level, even if the next level was the Southland Conference or even NAIA.
So letting one guy slip through the cracks to the most diligent JUCO recruiting staff in the country isn't the fatal mistake some people here want to make it out to be.
