Casanova (like Stovall) could and did play both ways.
And although everybody remembers Casanova was a three year first team AA, top five Heisman voter-getter ( for a defensive player, that was pretty amazing at that time) but was a great punt returner and led LSU in rushing as a freshman.
If you never saw him play, check him out.

I don't think there is any answer other then Mathieu.
I have never seen any defensive player on any team at any level do what he did from the defensive and special teams side of things. Never. Like it's not even close
It was in the perfect time of defense wins championships era of college ball. And he actually scored and got the ball back in critical times again, again and again. Dude was electric

Honey Badger
Dude was a legit threat to score on any play he’s involved in.
And he played defense….

So, I started this thread. The reason I listed those 4 players is because each of them, in their own right, could and did change the course of games, single-handedly. Everyone ran away from Dorsey, until Auburn chop blocked him into an injury. If Peterson was allowed to return more punts, he would have been a serious Heisman contender. We who were lucky enough to witness the greatness that was Dr Tommy Casanova KNOW that if he stayed healthy, he too would have won The Trophy. He had the talent, and the media behind him.
Thanks for playing,....I will again hang up and listen.

100% agree with 1st statement.
However, the Heisman is THE prestigious college trophy. That makes it more difficult to grant to someone who was suspended during the season due to poor decisions.

I would pretty certainly say everyone including PP7 himself would have liked to seen him return more. He cramped up too much, so it was for his own health.

LSU has a big collection of great players, no doubt. But Tyrann Mathieu made maybe a dozen of the all-time greatest single plays in LSU history.
