Just like old times, Nuss is obviously coached to not throw anything but outside. It wasn't until the 2nd half when he threw two passes over the middle.

Fair enough point. Season isn’t over. I’m settling down but a little concerned by the impotent clutch offense. Maybe getting Hilton healthy makes a big difference.

Sure sounds a LOT like Jayden 2022, huh?

Not really. Jayden could either 1) take a shot, 2) check if down and dump it off, or 3) take off and run for 50 yards. Nuss doesn’t have #3. So I thought he did a great job checking down and not forcing things that weren’t there.

But we’ve got to figure out something to close the gap on the yards from #3/Daniels’ legs. I mean, the only thing is running the ball with our backs. They’ve got to figure out something to make up for those yards. And it would open up so much more for Nuss, especially play-action.

Shh the Nuss haters might hear you. They want to keep blaming the qb. Apparently Nuss was checking out of plays in the 1st half before Sloan yelled at him to stop. Seems like without Nuss the whole game could have looked like the second half.

Also, He lost his temper with Garret, who kept playing like a nervous bird when we needed him to step up and make plays.

Garret played great until when he had to step up and win the game with a couple of great drives. He looked lost about 4-5 plays late.

Maybe the staff has gone too far in trying to tame the gunslinger out of Nuss, but we don’t need him putting the ball in harm’s way like he did at times earlier in his career as a backup.

Also, it’s highly unlikely any of those plays were designed to go to one check down route. You get that on some plays like screens, but Nuss likely chose to go short rather than throw routes further down the field. Unless you watch an all 22 replay, you won’t really know what else was available to him.

We get it. You hate Nuss. Get over it.

No one person or play ever costs a game, but I would agree that the slow walk 4Q offense, coupled with all the penalties and the late prevent, likely cost us that game.

I respect CBK deeply but where were he and his staff while we were melting down?

Geez, our lack of discipline and fundamental soundness are really hard to watch sometimes.

Ah well, nothing to be done about it now except learn and grow. Hopefully we'll see a different team this weekend.

First drive it looked like we’d move up and down the field with ease all night. I guess USC made adjustments, but it kinda looked like we made adjustments for them by not sticking with first drive type play calls.

There's sort of a comedy of errors aspect to everything -- Campbell's comments before the game, Lacy celebrating with the gunshot gesture, 10 penalties for 99 yards (which doesn't include Burns jumping offsides on the TD pass), Kelly in the postgame, etc.
Just off in a number of ways.

I know some liked Campbell's comments, but in a lot of programs/organizations, that's just something you don't do. That kind of stuff has a tendency to backfire.

Sloan lost the game…

I'm just not going to believe that this wasn't due to the direction of BK after half-time. In a half-time interview I believe BK said we need to come out and establish the run better, or something like that. That is exactly what he tried to do, and he was not going to stop no matter what. Maybe Sloan was pissed off because he knew the passing routes were there but he was being held back from what he did in the first half. Make no mistake, BK's hands were all over that.

Not sure if that is by design on those check down or if Nuss is scared to throw an INT

Yeah, Nuss just suddenly changed at half-time after going 20-24 in the first half. Now, no doubt they have preached to him about not throwing pics, but you are taking away one of his biggest attributes when you do that. His arm is what gives a non-running qb an advantage, and they took that away from him.

Looking back on JD in 2022, that may have been a huge part of the problem why he was always checking down and refusing to throw the ball downfield. I thought it was all JD just scared to throw downfield, but now looking at this game, and the second half in particular, and knowing that in the past Nuss loved to push the ball deep downfield with that cannon....this may actually be true. Making them into some kind of game manager.

no doubt....but that just means someone else is wide open, and the TE still has an easy matchup. This was designed by the coaches to come out and establish the run, take the lead, and control the clock....instead of taking advantage of what USC was giving us in the second half. Say what you will about Nuss, but he has always been a gunslinger and always had the ability to go through progressions and push it downfield....good or bad...and he didn't do that one time. He had a muzzle on him.

It was a Les Miles second half.

Kelly screwed it up by trying to force the run.

Nuss is scared to throw an INT
—I doubt this bc of the way he threaded the needle in the first half. Seems like he was told to stand down

You clearly haven't played football. If your team is not executing and making silly mental or physical errors they tend to get pissed and start yelling. idk when everyone got so concerned over "yelling" but I would much rather see the coaches getting pissed off rather than being okay with the poor results.
