re: Simple question but one I’ve not seen much of here, why didn’t we throw more jump balls?

Are you suggesting we pass the ball in the red zone?? Don't think our coaches are ready for that just yet.

That requires some risk.

JB was definitely coached up to avoid throwing picks this season.

AMEN.

Please go look at highlights from Ohio State's run to the 2014 National Championship game. Cardale was slinging the ball and just hoping they came down with it, and it worked.... Especially against teams that overwhelm you up front, why play 11 on 11 when you can play 1 on 1? You have 2 WRs in Dee Anderson and Stephen Sullivan who should be able to come down with balls like that. Teach them to be physical and get positioning. They have the talent and size to do the rest. It should never be a pick unless the WR fails at his job. At worse incomplete.

Jump balls require timing. Less than back shoulder more than a screen.

Did you see the timing on our screen passes?

actually we did quite a bit. In some really critical series we got cold feet, but overall through the year we did pass in the red zone frequently. Mostly on 2nd downs because 1st down runs sucked many times.

Hard for Burrow to throw while lying on his back!

Poorly coached, don't know how to attack the ball at the highest point,

I'm not sure you were implying this, but you can't coach high-pointing the ball. That is a natural technique some of us learn on the playgrounds. Those who don't pick it up naturally will never be able to do it. I've played with many 5.2 40 guys who did it like champs, and I've seen plenty of NFL receivers who could not do it.

This season, we had one of the worst redzone offenses in the country. For the majority of the season we had bottom 2 TD% in the redzone In the SEC.

Given our height at WR, why didn’t we throw more 50/50 jump balls?

Stephen Sullivan 6’6
Dee Anderson 6’5
Justin Jefferson 6’3 (came down with a really nice one vs A&M)
Terrace Marshall 6’2.5
Jamarr Chase 6’1 (who impressed me with his physicality for his relatively small size compared to the rest of our wideouts)

I've been asking that question for two years. The one time they threw it up to Sullivan it ended in the TD before the half. They never throw it to the tall receivers in the end zone. They throw to the shortest WRs and the FB. The OC is not innovative in his strategy. He is risk adverse.

Seems like the wouldnthrow a lot of those back shoulder throws to the bigger WR’s. I understand the fact that the LSU didn’t have as much talent as previous years.

However the lack of creativity in getting the players the ball in space was ridiculous. Also the offense had no misdirection or deception other than some horribly run screen passes.

We traded a run first HC for a run first D line coach and kept paying the HC.

Hardly saw it in the red zone, I commented on a thread yesterday about how underutilized the offensive talent is. 6'6" and 6'5" guys and correct me if I'm wrong but they weren't thrown fades to utilize their size. I will say, Sullivan at least, had a problem high pointing balls but I certainly would have tried Dee. One of the picks Burrow threw in the red zone was a f#$king come back route to Dee, put the ball up and make sure your miss is out of bounds so only your guy can get it, it just takes practice between qb and wr's.

It's about an OC diagnosing what defenses primarily play/do in the red zone and "utilize"(schematically and route wise to isolate a mismatch) with personnel to attack the defense. If the defense likes to play man, you damn right I'm taking a shot at you with a 6'5" wr on a 5'11" cb.

We threw at least one that was picked in the latter part of the season.
