The Old College Try

quote:

Brown had this idea that Sabonis would sign the scholarship papers first at the Kremlin and then at the Statue of Liberty.…[But] during a time of tense negotiations over nuclear proliferation, Reagan was unwilling to expend political capital on recruiting for LSU.

Dale wasn't that great at X's and O's, but he could recruit! Never heard this story before.

Plenty of so called X and O geniuses would give their left nut for the accomplishments of Dale Brown in basketball.

No doubt. The Final 4 in 81 and 86 were great. The funny thing about this story is that 86-87 team made it to the Elite 8 without Sabonis. I'm pretty sure that was in Cincy versus Indiana when Knight pounded the scorer's table and broke a phone. Joel Hillman hit from the corner to advance the Hoosiers to the Superdome.

Long story mixed with Gonzaga signing Sabonis' kid now. But if you read it to the end, you see Dale never stopped recruiting for LSU. No matter which department.

Wow what an incredible story. I was a huge Sabonis fan. It's a shame that by the time he came to the US he basically had no knees.

Great story.

good read, especially the part at the end.

She was handed a business card that read dale brown, lsu basketball. He was a coach killing time on what was looking like a wasted trip.

We could've had fricking Saba? Holy shite how did I not know this? That dude was Russian David Robinson, only he could shoot threes, make no look passes, and had a killer mean streak. Saba came over to the NBA with a bad back, bad knees, and bad feet and still was an all star. My God frick you Reagan.

And was still a baller. Wonder if the Blazers beat MJ in the finals if they had Sabonis.

Love Dale, what he built, what he and it meant in a period when LSU Football rode a rollercoaster, when LSU Baseball didn't exist just yet, but most importantly the way he truly cares about people.

Coach Stovall was canned too quickly, Dale carried the LSU mantle between Cholly Mac's retiring and Arnsparger/Skip's arrivals. 1985-1987 was a great three years to be a Tiger fan of the Big Three Sports.

Dale missed his true calling..being Dale Carnegie's true successor(not Zig Ziglar)

He's a good man that was one of the leaders in calling out the NCAA. Lester Earl is a real POS for what he did to Coach Brown.

He sure did bring in some stars.

I'd say Dale Brown was the best coach LSU ever had in any sport when considering the whole man. He was successful, a great coach, a great man, and kept things damn interesting. I still am amazed that so many people don't give him the respect he deserves.

go Dale go

Dale Brown deserves all the praise that he gets, but I'd like to ask him if he thought the fans got their money's worth when he ran the 4 corner stall offense all those games, and how much coaching was involved in running that stupid crap.

I'd also like to ask him why he stopped recruiting his last few years only to end up selling his soul in a desperate attempt to try and make up for it.

You know the fanbase you're dealing with here? The average LSU fan could literally shite gold every day and not be satisfied.

That's just a ridiculous thing to say. All big-time schools that are lucky enough to have large passionate fan bases will hear some negativity no matter what.

All you had to do with Dale is say, "It can't be done..." Then watch.

. . . Brown did not want this exchange to happen quietly.

Pretty much sums up Brown's entire personality.

I was in college when this was happening. Not all of the behind the scenes stuff was revealed at the time, but Brown made no secret of the fact he was after Sabonis. Oh, what could have been.

A great motivator and under-appreciated tactician, Dale will always be an LSU legend.
