For you guys who have done this for a while, does the normal digital antenna work or is it best I go with a tailgater type deal like dish has? Haven’t ever looked at buying a digital antenna but they look to be pretty cheap online

The antenna works just fine but it goes without saying that you won't get ESPN games.

You can even make an antenna, we did. Just get the coax piece you need then cut up some coat hangers and get some cookie cooling racks. Put them on a cheap metal rod. You can find out how to make it online. It always worked for us but we also would bring a tailgater so we could watch the ESPN games.

If you wanna get real slick, stream it with a phone/ipad and either chromecast or hdmi adapt it to the tv, use someone's work mifi for internet

ETA: or hell if you've got someone still in school get them to log into whatever they're calling eduroam now

A lot of people have personal hotspots on their phone's. We are gonna try a Fire stick/Roku this year with antenna for backup just in case.

We've used the tailgater dish for a few years. It's definitely not foolproof. Have had to spend time with customer service to get the kinks worked out but it mostly worked last year. If you have lots of trees around your tailgate it could be an issue.

Hmmm there's an idea...was thinking of using the Mifi to stream Apple Music when needed. Might be a good backup for streaming the game!

There's a guy that tailgates next to us and he uses one of these. For the most part, it works but sometimes it just quits. He comes over to our group to finish watching the game because he can't figure out what's the deal with his fire stick.

Yeah I should clarify our tailgate definitely uses this method successfully. Funny enough we tried the legit DirecTV tailgater thing but could never get it to work well, too many trees around the indian mounds I guess?

I’ve done this many times. I have a mifi and it works well until campus gets crowded. You will need an antenna.

We streamed from LSU WiFi with a student login all last year. I used Directvnow and not the espn app. I found it works better. We just had our TV set up close to a building. Had my tv and Roku plugged up to the generator and we were set all day

I’m bringing an inverter and some marine batteries and I’ve got an HD antenna. Will bring a firestick and try to stream off our phones as well but it doesn’t work great when there are lots of people around.

You can get an HD antenna for really cheap at walmart or even cvs. You'll have no problem getting the local channels in Baton Rouge. You'll be able to watch any game on ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX.

You'll have to get a little creative to watch ESPN games though.

Did this last year after buying a $100 smart TV on sale. Used my work MiFi and linked up smart TV to that. Have ESPN at home, so it was free and worked well.

You DO need some kind of cable/antenna combo for OTA channels, though.

digital/HD antenna

There's no real such things. It's the signals that the antenna receives that are digital and High Definition. The receiver in your TV needs to be able to process that signal - which they almost all do now. If you still have an analog TV, you'd need a digital receiver, not a 'digital antenna'.

Short: Don't let someone charge you more for a "digital/HD antenna".

IMO, Absolute best is iPad hot spot with Apple TV or equivalent. I can tailgate anywhere and watch any game.

I always setup in my yard about a week before the first tailgate because I know I’m going to have to call customer service because after the layoff, I’ve most certainly missed some software updates.
Sometimes this happens during the season too and I have to call to get them to send the update to my receiver.

Other than that it’s pretty awesome and well worth the money.

Just for your info. There is no such thing as a digital antenna. You could have a antenna from 40 years ago and will pick up the same channels and same quality as these antenna they say are HD.
