I think it may have been a couple of things.
1. He is still a "build the program first" type of coach, and that may hurt you in the current environment. You need to get good players via the transfer portal to fill holes and get young players to develop, and for depth. He actually moved a bit on that, but I think he didn't quite have that figured out yet, so talent always seemed spotty at one position group or another. I think this year was his best, though.
2. He whiffed on coordinator hires.
3. He doesn't deal with criticism well, and that colored public opinion pretty quickly. eventually the noise was too much to ignore.
4. I think he does not connect with players as a whole very well anymore.
5. I am not sure how engaged he was at LSU, but it seemed like he was not very engaged.

Don't know enough about the inner workings, but from observation:
Stubborn and standoffish (public, media, players)
NIL/portal bit him in the arse and the natural advantages he thought he would have as LSU's HC didnt materialize.
Awful gameday coach - complete inability to make in game adjustments.
There's a reason ND has never joined a conference - and would certainly never join the SEC.

Seriously... your opinion on why Kelly didn't work out.
FAFO the SEC is built different. That PAC12/Big10 game won't work here.

Bad choices on coordinators

He never recovered from making those gay recruiting videos.

He took the chief executive label too literally. There is not enough time or patience to be able to stand away from the details and hold folks accountable at a place like LSU in today’s college football landscape. Not sure that much of a hands off approach would have worked in the past either. Had nothing to do with cultural fit.

Lazy and did not think he needed to be in the details on everyday preparation. I also believe Kelley looked down on LSU/SEC as being uneducated and not as intelligent as himself when it came to the knowledge of the game. He got too accustomed to his ND scheduling and only really had to prepare for a few games a year to win.

1. Overreliance on assistants and he made poor decisions on assistants, generally (not in all cases).
2. Reluctance to exploit the transfer portal until just this last cycle.
3. (Related to #2) - General failure to adapt to the modern, mercenary era of CFB
4. By most reports, relatively lazy for a HC in such a position - "banker's hours"
5. Hubris/arrogance - it is difficult to make constructive changes if you have doubts anything needs improvement
6. Poor cultural fit (cliches are cliches for a reason)

1. Hiring Matt house
2. Letting Denbrock walk
3. Firing Raymond
He made great coordinator decisions at notre dame made poor ones here. That’s basically the story

And I think it became obvious to Woodward that the team quit on Kelly. Once the team loses confidence the coach has to go.

Alienation from some of his assistants. Players feed on that shite.
Poor output. Doesn't matter where it came from or how it came but poor qb/oline play.
Surprised tho being 5-3 and having 9 wins or more each season is crazy. He was a bad coach, he trusted some coaches he shouldn't have.
He struggled with his "own" Name, image and likeness. Kids have to know you love them and care about every single one of them first and foremost.
He will have much better repore coaching at a school in the north.

Yeah, I got the feeling that he thought talent would fall into his lap and that talent combined with his head coaching skills, he could be a championship competitor almost every year and that he could do that for the length of his contract and then retire rich if he wanted.

When mad and screaming....he looked like Sgt. Carter on Gomer Pyle show!

I think most of his previous experience was at smaller schools with exception of ND.
So not a valid point then bc he was at ND a long time

Kelly was not the leader that we thought that he was
He was more of a CEO than he was a coach or a leader
He wanted to come in and bark at people and then go play golf. That’s an overgeneralization, but that appears to be the
Perhaps he’s tired and why things like hey, you guys are spoiled comes out of his heart during a press conference
He just wasn’t up for the job. That’s the bottom line.
The more I study the head coach at Tulane the more I like him…
He says all the right things, but he seems very genuine. He’s not a guy that’s pretending.
I believe he believes what he says, and tries to live by it
We need somebody who’s a good people person
Somebody who cares
Somebody who works hard
Somebody that knows football

Bad fit but not what everyone is mentioning. I dont care you came from the birth but he made his name coaching Lilly white boys at notre dame.... the way to talk to, relate to and coach them up is miles different from how you do boys who had to make it out God awful situations in the deep south. He never seemed to connect with his players and in turn they never produced for him.
