I used to work with a college umpire, he never did any SEC games though. From what he told me it takes a lot to get into the minors, and you have to kind of decide early if that's the route you want. Because it's the track to the majors.

So there is some combo of guys not being good enough and guys just deciding that's the level they want.

That's me relaying a conversation from a decade ago about one guy's experience, so take it with a grain of salt.

That’s pretty much how I viewed it. Overall, I’d imagine there is a step up in quality from college, to each level of MiLB and then into MLB.

Like I said, I think the ABS is going to be a shitshow for college because of it.

The first challenge came on the 9th pitch of the game.

At one point it was Ole Miss 0-1, Mizzou 6-6 on challenges.

I fricking LOVE this. Expose the shite out of these clowns. Maybe the SEC will finally have to clean up their house.

I mean, one that I saw was by .8 of an inch. It isnt like that is gross incompetence by the ump.

This is going to be a shitshow in college IMO. The umpires are much worse than the MLB

Most of these clowns couldn’t cut it in the minors. My best friend is a former ump and ref in just about every sport. He still does HS Football locally. He got up to the D2 college level in basketball at one point, so he knows all of the rules in all sports. He also still knows a lot of refs and umps in the area.

I was griping about an ump last season and he mentioned that the SEC has a bad rep in the profession. He had a friend who had just left the SEC for the Big 12 for that reason. But that same friend had also been fired from the AAA and had to work college ball because he wasn’t getting back up to the pros. He said that’s pretty common. You either get HS guys who are on their way up (and don’t stay long if they are any good) or rejects headed down.

This was one thing 30 years ago when only 10 or so programs took the sport seriously. Those days are over. Half of the SEC stadiums sell out 10k+ every weekend now. There are several programs in the ACC, Big 12 and out west that are also passionate about college baseball. Smaller schools like Coastal and USM are all-in because they can still compete. And unlike college hockey, most of the schools in the north still field teams and are occasionally competitive. The days of hiring bums and rejects as umps needs to end.

Either the SEC needs to pay enough for some minor league-quality umps to take the jobs, or they need to go to full ABS behind the plate and let the umps handle the field.

According to my friend, both in some of the people the SEC hires and also how they treat them.

I told him they sure as hell don’t blame or fire anyone publicly.

That is exactly what I was thinking! I wonder how many games they cost teams over the 2026 regular season?

For anyone that hasn't checked you can go to the link, go to the bottom and click on "All Challenges" and it lists the info on each one and allows you to watch a replay of every challenge. Pretty neat.

Jeff Head had only 5 calls overturned by challenge.

308 total pitches in the UK vs Vandy game (77 batters). Some are hit/fouled off and some are swung on and missed, but 5 out of 200 or so that were taken is not bad.

If the outcome is just the both teams get the same zone, it will be a win.

I’m not so sure that’s a good ratio. There is way more than meets the eye here.

The denominator - that is, the number of pitches that are essentially subject of umpire discretion - is much fewer than 200ish in a 308 pitch game. As you noted, we’re not considering the pitches that are swung on (hit and put into play, hit and out of play, or missed and auto strike), as those are auto calls. There are also a significant number of pitches that are blatant balls and strikes where the any guy with a pulse standing on the rafters could make the call. Those pitches aren’t really part of the calculus. The denominator really is only the close, marginal pitches within a few inches around the strike zone where you’re relying upon someone who’s supposed to be an “expert” in his field to objectively determine a borderline ball or strike. The number of those pitches in a given game is not 3 figures, it’s 2 figures, and I’d suggest it’s somewhere around 50-75.

Then there are also pitches that are erroneously called a ball or strike that are not challenged for any number of reasons, so the missed call number very likely should be much higher.

TLDR version: Jeff Head does not get the benefit of the doubt from me.
