He'd call Alex Edwards "Elleck" as if that was somehow honoring Alex Box's family.

I have been listening to pro and college games on the radio for 55 years. Hawthorn’s Warren Morris call was the GOAT call in any sports at any level.

I've been listening to games almost as long, and ... no. It's a great call, but it's not the GOAT. Take off the purple and gold glasses.

Don’t blame them. Jim wasn’t a great broadcaster.

Hawthorne was great in all three sports back in the mid to late 80s and early 90s.

You could "see" what was happening on the basketball court back then based upon his call.

As his eyes got worse, so did his calls.

He's not one of the SEC legends, but he's not far off.

I was always willing to forgive Hawthorne for his shortcomings. Part of it has to do with me choosing local radio play by play syncing with the broadcast over the national call. It was part familiarity and part receiving more pertinent information. Hawthorne’s mistakes we’re actually part of the charm! But for me nothing tops Jim Henderson with the Saints. Jim and Hokie Gajun was pure money on every broadcast!

John Ferguson is the King. Hawthorne's call of the Warren Morris home run was his finest hour.

I could be in areas in the Southeast choked out by other stations and still hone in on John Ferguson's and Jim Hawthorne's voices. What a thrill to hear Tiger games no matter where I was. I picked up WWL everywhere it seems. On several occasions, I picked up WWL all the way to Butler, PA. I felt like I was part of something big when I listened to the games. Who cares if Jim made a few mistakes? He was a quality man. Many of today's radio broadcasters are so plain vanilla I'd rather tune them out.

What do you mean? Why would they do that?

Something I don’t want to repeat, because I heard it years ago, nothing public has come of it, and I don’t want to slander a man.

But watching hold the rope, the Warren Morris storied, and now this one about his actual job and he’s barely in one of them, with few of his calls used… I have to conclude that something is up.

You clearly wanted the Rant to know you had some inside information.
If you don't even give a hint towards what LSU may have against JH, you shouldn't have posted that attention-whoring shite.

All you did is open the door for the Rant to speculate and think the worst.

Dude could have simply called Skip Bertman a motherfricker while drunk at a private party.
But thanks to you, the Rant is automatically thinking he was using his LSU laptop to download porn or sexually harassing LSU employees

You did this.

Jim Hawthorne wasn’t the best voice in LSU history, much less SEC history

We all associate JH with great memories, and that is where we think he is great. But honestly, he sucked.

Back in the 2008-11 time frame, I'd go to Turtle Bay and later Legends in NYC to watch...if it was a night game, once I got clear of Newark Airport and into open space on I-78, I could pick up WWL and listen to the post game show all the way home!!!!!

No man, I don’t want to, I want to point out that it seems obvious to me that LSU is not pushing Jim Hawthornes career at LSU as a being one of the greats.

All of you who claim that he wasn’t, and reference John Ward or Larry Munson, are just parroting their “greatness” because the UT and UGA SID have publicized their calls and glorified them in every media avenue they could over the years…. Not because you were listening to the 1980 UGa Tennessee game on the radio.

Point is, LSU never missed an opportunity to promote his calls in national media until now, in a few PRIME opportunities to do so, and I think it is HIGHLY suspect. I think they are distancing themselves.
