I was actually thinking the same thing, so I went back over the last two seasons and looked at Alabama's total number of penalties and penalty yardage in every game they've played.

I sorted pretty easily. All conference games and all Bama home games, and then all out of conference neutral site games and post season play.

I was actually kind of surprised to find that Bama averaged 4 penalties for 45 yards per game in that first category, and 6 penalties for 56 yards in the second category. So in games that are likely not officiated by an SEC crew, they average 2 more penalties and 11 more yards per game.

As long as BOTH teams can get away with it, I have no problem. It's when only one team gets to tackle defenders for free that it really makes a big difference.

Clemson got away with a defensive holding or PI on an Alabama possession deep in Clemson territory. Turn about is fair play.

When Clemson went up 2 touchdowns and had the ball again, I kept waiting for the drive killing holding penalty after a big completion.

I was cooking during the game. Bama was in the red zone and their RB ran for a first down to around or maybe inside the 1 yard line. So it was a good time to check the food. I was blown away when I came back and Bama had only scored 3 points.

I rewound and was shocked. The freaking refs called a false start on Bama !!! Moved them back and Bama couldn't do anything and had to kick a FG. In SEC games if Bama gets inside the five they would literally have to pull a gun and shoot someone or a knife and stab someone to get a penalty called on them. And the refs would probably let the knife stab go if it wasn't a life threatening wound.

The thing is, you can't just look at the total number of penalties and yards (although I'm not surprised by what you found).

What's even more important is when and how those penalties are called. And even more importantly, what penalties ARE NOT called.

I don't need stats to form my opinion about Bama getting help.

I saw it with my own eyes when Bama played Miss. St. last year when Calvin Ridley clearly stepped out of bounds on his own, but was allowed to come back in play and make a huge catch during a critical moment of the game. The official even threw his hat to signal Ridley went out-of-bounds.

It was an absolute travesty and an insult to the integrity of the game.

Feeling really bad for BAMA today. It just doesn’t seem fair to have non-SEC officials for such a big game! They picked on BAMA by calling 6 penalties on them and only 1 against Clemson! That just doesn’t seem fair at all! I think Saban needs to petition the NCAA to only allow experienced SEC officials for championship games!
I feel so bad for them!!!

I also found it interested that he did not "work the refs" like he does SEC refs.

THAT is NOT Nick working the refs. That is the refs asking Lord Saban what they should do. They have to verify if it is okay to call the meaningless penalties against Bama. They may think it is appropriate but if he disagrees it could cost them their jobs so they always check first.

My favorite highlight from last year's NCG against UGA was Bama's blatant false start on 4th and goal when they scored the game-tying TD.

That's why I asked earlier what conference those refs were from. They weren't SEC refs, but they sure treated UGA like it was an SEC Game.

They had to play in a fair game, which isn't fair to their thinking.

I've asked this before on here, but why in todays college football do we still have conference specific referees? Why do we not have crews that travel from conference to conference? The college game has gotten too big and makes too much money to not have paid NCAA referees.

The game is not that dramatically different from conference to conference and travel cost should not be in the discussion. With the geographic size of these conferences now, getting on a plane and staying in a hotel is a must for these crews.

Neither team should know who the crew will be or what part of the country they are coming from. It's past time for this to happen.

Bama had zero penalties called against them in that game.

MSU probably gets f'd more than any team in the SEC by bama officiating bias. At least statistically bama and lsu are about the same but bama gets the calls and no calls at critical times despite the statistics.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the word targeting was even breathed last night.

And how strange was it when the Clemson QB makes direct contact with the defender helmet to helmet.

Not even a mention by Fowler or Herbstreit.

Weird. Almost as if there was a pregame discussion concerning that matter.

It may have been done already, and I surely do not have the time to do so, but this is a breakdown I'd love to see. Penalties against Alabama's opponent and the situation in which said penalty was called.

Didn't this year's bowl season prove the bias in SEC Officiating? Bama probably had more penalties in the last 2 games than they did all season.

I agree, but they still missed an obvious targeting helmet to helmet on Dylan Moses early in the game. That would have been a targeting in every game against an opponent of Alabama. They are still getting away with a lot.
