Scheming Around A SOFT OLine: When You Can't Block 4 With 6.....

I had the unfortunate occurrence of being at a party Saturday for the game.

This meant I had to listen to the announcers for the first time in years (torture), but nothing compared to the fact that there was a Bama fan at this party too.

The one item he literally kept laughing about..and I mean belly laughs....was just how soft our Oline was. Multiple replays where they just sent 3 or 4, and one guy would break a double team and kill the play.

This was consistent, which begs the question, why didn't our staff adjust?

You know, when your Oline is as soft and weak as ours is, there ARE ways to work around this. Other teams with much softer and weaker Olines did for Bama.

Just a few suggestions:

1) Quit calling plays that take an extra 2-3 seconds to develop due to fakes that DON'T work. Bama was not biting on Play Action simply because our soft Oline can't run block that well. They knew this. So all these cute fake tosses, etc, just took extra time that allowed our weak Oline to be exploited.

2) Call more misdirection/bootleg plays to get them to overcommit to one side, and roll the a couple of soft linemen out with the QB to help.

3) Screens. Draws. Where were they? Bama ran them and ran them to perfection. Converted a few third and longs with them.

4) Please, for the love of god, quit running sweeps to the SHORT SIDE OF THE FIELD. When you have a shitty Oline that can't block, you eliminate 80% of the field here to work with. Hallman quit coaching 20+ years ago. Let go of his playbook.

5) Quick passes from the shotgun. Seriously. Snap the ball. Quick drop. Release. Bama was doing it despite the fact that our weak Dline couldn't get a rush. That is what Burrow should be doing as well.

I could go on and on, but those are a few ideas.

The lack of adjustments was horrifying.

Horrifying yet so typical.

Ensminger's terrible play calling killed our Defense.

That call before half on 2nd and 4 where we should have run the clock out was one of the dumbest play calls a coach can make.

When your Oline sucks and your are inside the 15, DO NOT have your QB turn his back to any part of the line for a second. We are lucky that wasn't a safety. Two more runs there were in order, but nope.

Gave them a TD before help due to stupidity.

No matter what type of scheme or plays you try to run you will not beat Bama with a soft Oline.Hell this unit was tossed around by Southeastern

This.
We actually had two nice slant plays called and our guy looked open, but the O-line couldn't even block their guy low, so he jumped up and knocked the ball down.

Throwing long wasn't going to happen.
Running was a no go at all. What should have have done, ran the option? Try to run reverses?

I loved how we kept running play action passes with absolutely no running game and no blocking.

Bingo.

We were tossed around by SELU AND LaTech.

So, why haven't we adjusted and done some things differently instead?

You CAN scheme around this inconsistency.

3) Screens. Draws.
Two completely different plays. Draws down't work when you can't block the middle. Screens should work and we tried 3 of them iirc but all of them were sniffed out.

Also tried. 3 of them were blocked at the line.

LSU has ran maybe 5 screens successfully in the past 10 years

I know, but seemed like this was the safest play to make.

I realize our crappy Oline can't even stop that, but consistently trying play action or other fakes that take extra time were just begging for bad results.

We seem to have no answers when plan A isn't working.

The need to eat the clock somehow was lost on the Tigers approach to the entire first half. They left many seconds on the clock over and over agsin when they should not have. They left enough time to make that possession near their goal line not critical as it ended up being.

did you watch the game? we tried max protect, spreading the field, screens etc...their dline killed us no matter what formation we lined up in.

bama has always been a great screen team...a few years back they beat us with screens at the end of each half. Hell they converted 3rd and 16 with a TE screen b/c we brought about 6-7 guys. Our guys can't run screens effectively yet.

I was surprised by that too. The few first downs we got, we hurried to the line.

I could understand it if it was the 3rd Q and we were down 20, but this was the first half.

However, when we were down 20, the coaching staff went into surrender mode. Punting once inside the 40 and then going for the FG.

Our staff clearly did not have a clue how to win the game.

Well if we get into a decent bowl, we may see another big Dline...

LSU fans have moved from...

- less talent
- less talent on offense
- offensive play calling
- soft offensive line

on one of the screens the bama dline basically held Helaire from setting up the screen and Burrow had nowhere to go.

Just like every other school, you let the dline come in and send your whole oline downfield, whether legal or not, because most refs are not going to call it anyway and take advantage of it like Auburn does. Even Bama did it on a crucial third down against LSU.

Why the should coaching staff be expected to have a Plan B or Plan C. Our AD didn't after Plans A&B...
