not play LSU the week before

Malena is pretty good, Trey williams is a beast and so fast, and this year they get brandon williams.
Well, we're talking last year's game, so Brandon Williams is irrelevant. Malena is a legit SEC back, but he's not a real difference maker. Trey Williams didn't have a carry against LSU.
Malena has 12 carries and Manziel had 17. Michael had 8. So, the RB's they used were good SEC players, but not guys who put fear into your defense. You don't scheme to stop Malena.

Containment in the pocket was part of it.
Speed on the line was part of it.
DB's staying with their coverage and trusting that the DL/LB crew could control Manziel. He completed so many passes last year because db's would break off their coverage and he'd lob up some sloppy pass and score a TD because nobody was covering the WR.
When he did that against LSU it ended in a turnover.

If I remember correctly, didn't Chavis say that's the game we went Nickel 90% of the time? Micah Eugene was on the field a ton in that game.

Or does this offense require such a talent at QB that without one they turn into Auburn?
doubt it. it's an Air Raid variant. get a pretty accurate passer, and I think it'll be at least good. especially if the surrounding cast is as talented as you say (I don't really follow aTm recruiting).

I guess the question I have, is will last year's scheme work this year? I don't think going Dime is going to work because they'll run all over us. Last year they stopped using the run game for some reason.
Using UF's scheme of not rushing the Dline and playing coverage wont' work either, because that gives him all day to pass and he's only going to get better at recognizing open WRs.

Also, can we (as fans of an aTm "rival") stop using this moniker? I think "JM" is more than adequate.

I can't seem to find it on web, but I remember reading an A&M WR or maybe JFF saying that LSU was effective because our DB's were so physical with their WRs at the line then dropped into a zone D. Then when we switched to the 3 man line we contained JFF and did not let him get loose.

Mingo and Montgomery's speed on the outside helped contain him. That's more freak athletes than anything else.
But, the key was not actually forcing the pressure, just making sure he threw the ball.
As everyone has said, containment.
Make him beat you with his arm.
Someone mentioned going away from the run, and why didn't they run b/w the tackles, well, that's where A&M's type of offense is going to struggle to win this conference with Sumlin's scheme.
Their Achilles heel is going to be short yardage conversion, just like all the gimmicky offenses.

Also had Micah Eugene spying him most of the game and it made a huge difference.

And made him throw the ball which he is "ok" at but in my opinion McCarron is better. JM will not do this year what he did last year.

I think every point has been made, just speed off the edges, quick linebackers and coverage sacks.
I'm going to rewatch that game right now.. shite was awesome.

I think that ran a lot of nickle but the game changer was moving from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4 and moving another guy with speed up in the box. I keep wanting to sat kwon alexander came up big on the outside in this game IIRC

Invited him to a party night before the game

Yep we just played a base defense against that type of offense basically a nickle and dime package.lsu just has the team speed to get sideline to sideline faster than most schools

See, they've got a good RB committed this year, Brandon williams (was a 4*+ from OU), Trey Williams (speedster), and Ben Malena (legit SEC back). Those guys + TAMU's good OL can equal a shitpile of offensive yards.
I guess what I'm saying is that with a great OL, good WRs, and an accurate QB, the air raid is near impossible to defend. When the QB is accurate and can run like JF, then it's is IMPOSSIBLE to stop. Just gotta pray they make mistakes and your O can keep up.
With a pro offense, that's not the case, or at least it doesn't seem to be the case.

we ran more mustang/dime (3-2-6) after their first few drives, and that was pretty much all she wrote.

From memory I think the biggest thing they did was dial back the pass rush to better contain the QB in the pocket. This allowed their DB's to focus on coverage rather than reacting to QB runs. And Manziel wasn't that good at sitting in the pocket and finding open receivers. It took away A&M's big plays, and A&M wasn't good enough to consistently grind out scores.
