Sam Ehlinger, Another Look

Sam Ehlinger:
Yes, he improved from 2017 to 2018, making a tremendous leap in the right direction. But no one is expecting him to become the next great NFL QB that UT fans think he is.
Accuracy
In the short game, he has not had many problems hitting the open receivers. However, as the throws moved further downfield, ball placement has become an issue. There are several times when he missed open receivers running routes on the horizontal plane. His timing sucks which leads to bad judgement in anticipation. The further away he has to throw, the worst it gets.
Pressure is another problem I saw. He almost always folded under pressure. He is either going to take off and run or get sacked. He rarely overcame a defensive player busting through the line at him or simply putting a little pressure on his front side.
Pocket Awareness
LSU is going to put pressure on him, a lot! That's because he has shown that he lacks pocket awareness and can't make a decision quick enough to escape the pressure. His ability to read a defense is mediocre, at best.
He is going to have problems against the "Green Team" because it puts pressure on the QB while also defending the pass.
Athlete
He is huge and can run which can be great because it allows him to make some big plays. However, if a team can put a Spying Linebacker on him, they can shut that shite down too.
Overall:
I think he is going to do big things at Texas this year and will win some games overall. But against LSU, it is a nightmare scenario for a QB like him. We have the numbers up front to force Sam to make decisions under pressure while covering his receivers.
As far as camp, Herman keeps talking about his defense and says a lot of standard things you say about your QB (He is better, improving, etc...) but their scrimmage the other day was won by the offense in the final two minute drive. That says a lot about a defense that is only returning 3 starters.
We will have to see in a few weeks.

No one expected Tim Tebow to become a great NFL QB, and he had a fairly productive college career.

Burrow is a much better college QB than Ehlinger and will be a better pro

Burrow doesn't play against Ehlinger. Burrow plays against the Texas defense and Ehlinger plays against ours.
As long as Burrow's offense scores more than Ehlinger's offense, I'll be happy.

Eh... it's a scrimmage.

No he isn't.

Maybe.

What's wrong with people being positive?

I'll be interested to see if we start Stevens in Quarters.
If LSU does, they should expect a lot of QB sweeps and zone reads his way. If successful Texas will no-huddle to keep us in that base formation on 3rd downs.
They will look to isolate Stevens on the edge. Playing GS the week prior should be helpful.

I like Stevens at Quarters even on 3rd Downs.
He’s a hybrid safety. He should be able to cover.

I know what you're saying but I think you might be selling Stevens a little short.

Yes, Quarters is better suited for 3rd downs. But it sounds like LSU might be using Quarters as their base early on.

Against most teams we’ll face, We can probably play Stevens all three downs.
He’s big enough and fast enough. And how many teams are going to Li-Ning up in heavy sets that we would want a more traditional OLB there?
That’s probably why Divinity moves to MLB.
He’s one of our best players but he can’t play OLB in certain packages. We want him on the field at all times if he can play the position .

Burrow is a better QB than Elinger. Pretty clear.

Stevens will absolutely contain QB sweeps. So what. LSU defense glaring weakness last year was the option scheme that Dan Mullen ran in the 4th quarter. LSU had no answer. Those options were run by Franks. Elinger is a Much better runner than Franks. Herman is not dumb. He can watch film. He has a running QB. We will see some option plays not just zone read plays.
Elinger is not Tebow.

I’m not selling anything, I’m just saying Steven’s likely to be tested in LSU’s Quarter package.
If you were Tom Herman, who would you test in the Quarter package?

Your kidding yourself if you think that Ehlinger and Herman aren’t going to give us trouble, I fully expect them to take the dan Mullen blue print and apply it.
2nd half adjustments are going to be enormous in this game.
