Orgeron and Ensminger would have found a way to get him involved.

When Shep got the ball in space, he was electric. His problem while he was here was that his hands were subpar to say the least, being that he wasn't a natural receiver.

So after his freshman year, we abandoned all of the packages for him and ran downhill every play instead.

Lovie Smith was going to cut him at Tampa until he sawing him covering a punt return. He saw the heart and desire and decided to use him as a gunner.

Other coaches coached up his catching and route running abilities at Tampa.

Tampa got him off waivers almost 38 months ago.

It seemed like he was only used as a power back at LSU. He's one of the best receivers in the NFL at RB now and I don't remember him catching many passes at LSU. Seattle was using him as a fullback, someone failed to realize just how good he is as an all purpose back.

Russell was one of the people blocking Wright from getting playing time and the guys who kept both of them from putting up big numbers here have had pretty good NFL careers.

Right lack of creativity prevented these guys from making plays consistently just like it held back DJ Chark. Now look at him.

More examples of talent we wasted. Averages ten yards per carry as a freshman. Quit giving him the ball.

Look, Russell was a great athlete at LSU. Unfortunately, athletes often struggle to find a position in college. He didn't have the arm talent to play QB in the SEC, and he wasn't very natural at playing receiver.

Russell just didn't have the body type to play running back. Yes, he was very fast and shifty, but you can't run jet sweeps all game. He also didn't have the hands in college to be a reliable target coming out of the backfield.

Looking back, he probably should have made a transition to defense. In fact, he was asked to run DB drills at the LSU pro day. He could have been one of those guys that played defense but got an occasional snap on offense to utilize his athleticism.

Correct, he was an awful receiver for us. Tons of upside and its great a team held on to him for as long as it took. But, he was not a good receiver or RB (frosh year) for us.

Well said. His routes and body positioning on receptions were as bad as his hands in college.

We tried getting him the ball in every way. Outside run, inside runs, bubble screens,wr throws

we tried nothing, and you know it... never gave him the ball, face facts, Miles's offense screwed him.. just like many others..

Exactly. When LSU lost 13-3 at home to UF Shep had zero touches. My UF friends were floored. WTF Les. No need to use a potential playmaker in a game where you score 3 points at home.

He was probably the most wasted talent by Les.

Not sure if accurate but I think that would mean LSU had 3 WRs on the same team that are now starters (Beckham, Landry, Shepard) in the NFL plus another (James Wright) that is getting playing time and has caught a few passes this year.

4 future NFL WR's on the roster at the same time and we still had sh*t for a passing game

Russell Sheppard
Alfred Blue
James Wright
Spencer Ware

all have had a ton of success in the NFL and were unable to find such success at LSU. This is why Les Miles is no longer the coach.

Spencer Ware led LSU in rushing in 2011 and was 2nd team all-SEC, how did he not have success at LSU?

Blue started off and on but kept getting injured.

He did have 39 career receptions at LSU, as little as we threw to our RBs, that's actually a pretty large number imo.
