Small price to pay to get rid of employee(s) you don't want anymore.
Hell, Craft is pretty much on the LSU payroll now.

I have considered that but then I'm like no way LSU would stoop that low. Right?

ETA: though with F. King involved I guess anything is possible. How awesome would it be if it turned out he was behind the money going missing.

For real.
quote:

The Athletic Band Scholarship program was established in 1971 and was awarded to all members of the band, including the Golden Girls and the Color Guard. In 1978, an additional 40 scholarships were added for “outstanding instrumentalists.”

The director of bands, King’s immediate supervisor, has administrative oversight over the stipends and scholarships. Wording in the department’s budget documents for the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2014, reflects the “intent to restrict the scholarships to instrumentalists.”

King was told directly “that these funds were not intended for any band member who was not an instrumentalist, such as Golden Girls and Color Guard.”

King directed $14,000 to members of the Golden Girls and Color Guard without the approval of the dean of the School of Music and the director of bands, according to the audit. He, therefore, violated the university’s policy.

Craft replied that inter-office emails clearly show the supervisors signed off on every recommendation King made for the scholarships.

Do y'all not want dancers or something? If anyone in Tiger Band should get paid, it should be them. They put in TONS of work.

Must be a Damon Talley protege. Hopefully Talley has better comprehension skills and understands the world of shite he's in.

The key distinction here is that there are two scholarship funds: One established in 1971 to support stipends for all of Tiger Band and one established in 1978 for recruiting "outstanding instrumentalists". LSU is alleging that Roy mixed the funds inappropriately. Since Golden Girls and Color Guard are not instrumentalists, they are not eligible for payment from the 1978 fund. Golden Girls and Color Guard have always been eligible and received payment from the 1971 fund (which the audit calls a stipend, though at times the wording is confusing).

Hope this helps.

I could see giving him a pass on the missing money thing, but everything else isn't excusable, only way King wins this this case if the audit is straight up lying. There are multiple instances of insubordination on King's part, he thinks he has full control of the athletic bands when doesn't. He has also strong armed people into his ensemble which is a non audition group. In all seriousness he isn't that good of a director atleast compared to the other people in som, it's why he has the lowest band.

I guess that's why he was named "Band Director of the Year." Also. The Tiger Band was named as one of the "Top Ten Marching Bands" in the country. Also, He was nominated for "outstanding faculty member" from the LSU School of Music this past fall. AMong other many, many accolades. All of this has happened during his time as Director of the Tiger Band.

My immediate thoughts (and before all of the facts are in) are these:

1. I was in TGBFTL with Roy King, and know on a personal level almost everyone involved in this story, including F. King Alexander.

2. I do not personally know the Dean of Music, but have known previous Deans.

3. I do think that TGBFTL is less than it has been in the past and would very much like to see it return to its glory days--but I also believe it is a VERY good band as these things go.

4. I believe there is no greater cess-pool of petty political hacks, no greater nest of back-stabbing power-grabbers, and no higher concentration of smug and self-congratulating bastards than higher education--and I believe that LSU is no exception to this rule.

5. I believe that Roy King has very likely been insubordinate, careless with money, and that it is absolutely true that he broke the policy against nepotism.

6. I believe it is highly unlikely that any employee at LSU cannot be convicted of even a mild form of insubordination, and so the real question is whether or not the charge of insubordination is real and substantive. It certainly doesn't have to be.

7. I believe that universities are notorious for subverting "donor intent," (particularly after the death of the donor) applying bequests to what they, the University, decide to spend money on--even if it directly contradicts the donor's intent.

8. I know for a fact that some deans and university presidents will purge anyone standing in their way, through any means possible. I know for a fact that this has happened at LSU--but I do not know whether such a scenario describes F. King Alexander or the current Dean of Music.

9. Roy is done and will not be returning as director of TGBFTL.

10. I am in favor of TGBFTL returning to its glory days.

11. I am doubtful that ceding additional control of the band to the Dean of Music is likely to accomplish such a goal--indeed, I am rather certain that the band will be worse.

12. Donors to the University and to TGBFTL should pay close attention to the outcome.

13. Whatever the outcome, it would restore confidence in TGBFTL if the University would form a committee composed of TGBFTL alumni to evaluate the "outcome" and make proposals to benefit the band. Those proposals should have teeth so that whatever doubts are raised by this sordid affair can be put to rest.

14. The Golden Band from Tigerland has been better, but is still one of the nation's best, formed out of an esprit de corps that is thoroughly and rabidly purple and gold. This could easily become lost under the thumb of an indifferent bureaucrat, not native to Louisiana, who is just "passing through" on the way to his next career posting. This University deserves the BEST, if for no other reason than because we could so easily BE the best.

He has a high profile job he I'd going to get accolades, I know people in the SOM who aren't impressed with him. LSU has a pretty solid music School, outside of traditional music powerhouses (Eastman, Juilliard, CCM, NTU.) We should demand a very high level of quality. From what I've heard from in the SOM, he doesn't give that.

I'll say this I've meet the new dean only once but know people who work for him. I also know of Tally who is the director of bands who is second in command if tiger band, he doesn't directly control it but King doesn't have power over him.

From what I've heard and maybe my sources are wrong, but they are both solid and we can do better than King.

I hope we bring in someone solid for the next director of tiger band.

One more thing go keep in mind when Frank left the director of tiger band and director of bands were no longer one position. Don't compare how Frank ran the band to how Roy ran it.

I'm not personally close to the situation but I'm good friends with people in the SOM and I know very well two people listed on the lawsuit filed by King.

I know there'll only be an interim director for a while, but I know who he is (Dr. Llinas) and he's extremely good at what he does.

Maybe they will let him lead it and find someone to lead Roy band. Wouldn't hurt to reduce faculty size with so many budget cuts happening.

A lot of times with Symphonic Band, they have the grad assistants do some of the conducting.

Who gives a flying frick about an ex-band director? Nobody is going to give a single frick about this so it's not really bad press because nobody cares.

Only everyone that posted before you did here. And several years worth of former students who respect him, and also several newspapers and news outlets.

What a terribly dumb comment. Wow. Do us all a favor, and never have an opinion about anything ever again. Ever.

Nobody outside LSU fans give a shite about this development. It's not negative press when barely anyone knows or even cares to know about it. Most LSU fans probably don't even know who this is or why they should even care. It's not like it's going to damage the reputation of LSU in the eyes of anyone. Sorry I hurt your feelings whatever family member you are.

people will give a shite if the school of music runs the Golden Girls out of the band, I'm sure of that.
