Stats-wise, no.

All-around contribution wise, yes.

You don't need to be a prolific scorer to be a legend.

Ricky's about as close to Rudy as it gets at LSU. And I mean the Notre Dame underdog, not the LSU basketball star

Scored 8 out of the final 10 points when we were down 4 with 4 minutes to go against Kentucky to lead the tigers to the final four. Yes, legendary.

That's pretty freaking disrespectful to Ricky. Rudy was some lying scrub who got in for a couple plays. Blanton is all of the place in LSU basketball record books and got drafted.

You should be banned for asking that question.

Yes.

The game against UNLV in ‘89 was epic.

Yes. Without a doubt. He earned it.

Blanton was drafted into the NBA, he wasn’t some scrub who worked his arse of just to be a specialty role player in college. He was an outstanding college player and was talented enough to be drafted into a league with fewer teams than it has now. Anyone who thinks Blanton has no talent obviously never saw him play.

Not only was he drafted, he hung around for a season or 2.

I just came here to echo this sentiment. Blanton was one of my all time favorites.

Remember that team with he and CJ? Not a lot of talent on that team and if my memory is correct after the prop 48 rulings on Roberts and Mo came out we were picked to finish last in the SEC that year. Those 2 carried that team and while CJ got the pub 6-7 Ricky Blanton provided not only the interior work but also the cohesion offensively that allowed us to win while Jackson was free to put up all those shots. He did the dirty work, took on the opposing big men, led the team in assists and still managed to score 20+ppg while being very efficient. How many guys at LSU have gone 20+ppg, 8+rpg, 4.5+apg while shooting 50+%Fg, 79%Ft and 40% from 3 since Blanton did it? I’ll bet that list is very short if there even is a list.

His story would make a great “30 for 30” type documentary.

A legend yes - one of the top 15 players of all time as honored in that ceremony a couple of years back - IMHO no.

If there was a stat for "role player" he'd be in the College Basketball Hall of Fame!

Wow. Did you really even have to ask? Anyone who says no is probably around 20-30 years young.

He was so clutch. So smart. His stats do warrant it. His grace and demeanor on the court absolutely warrant it. And his love for LSU seals it.

This is a good read about some aspects of the season. He played center at times.
