That was my sophomore year at LSU. I remember that game. The student section used to be rocking in those days.

80K+ fans back then and tailgating wasn’t a separate event. Now you have $100k fans and many others who never intend to go in the stadium. Back then you didn’t have all the paid lots so people had plenty options to park. Fans stayed the whole game and tailgated after too.

The crowds have been great for the Miles and O years too! And now on to Kelly.

I was a student at LSU and my bro from USL came to that game and was like "Oh- so THIS is real college football."

He moved to BR and has been there for the last 25 years.

How was it possible LSU lost 3 games in 1997? That was a great team from top to bottom, and had that epic upset of Florida.

Ole Miss game was a big letdown on the 11am Jefferson pilot game of the week after we beat Florida.

Sorry, but I was also at that game and it was not irrelevant that we lost that ‘97 home game to Auburn. NO ONE on Auburn’s D wanted a piece of Cecil Collins that night. Never seen a back in a single game as unstoppable as he was that night. Over 200 yds rushing, if I recall correctly. The whole stadium is yelling “Run the dam- ball” on 3rd and 1 late in the 4th and Dinardo has Herb Tyler roll left and he throws an incompletion. We make that first; we win the game. Incredibly frustrating. “RUN THE DAM- BALL!”

3rd and 2…one of DiNardo’s greatest fails! Just run the f’king ball. Cecil was literally unstoppable

Am I supposed to believe that postgame traffic wasn’t an issue then? Maybe the stadium should downsize a bit. Even so, 100K now can’t match the volume of 80K 25 years ago.

Of course, this topic has been beat to death, but what the hell.... For me, the biggest difference is that the true blue collar LSU fans have been priced out of Tiger Stadium, which is now populated more than ever by corporate types (i.e. those who can afford the seat licenses, etc.) who want a fun night out but don't like to be inconvenienced by hot weather, traffic, etc. Sure, they want LSU to win, but they're not diehard fans who will sit and support the Tigers through thick and thin.

Of course, the stadium expansion has made the traffic situation worse, and the quality of TV broadcasts today is exponentially better than what it was 20 years ago, giving people more of an excuse to stay home and not deal with the hassle involved with seeing a game in person. Lots of things involved here, and I don't think there is any one solution.

…and Cecil was running behind arguably the greatest guard in Tiger history, Alan Faneca, consensus All-American, 2021 Canton inductee. Frustrating still after 24 years.

this.

back then, the people who sat around us was almost like a family.
hell i didn’t even know half their names. but for 7 Saturdays every fall, we all sat together, screamed together, cheered together, complained together, etc. beating Florida in ‘97 was almost euphoric. i suffered for years with these people and then FINALLY we win one of those. the whole stadium had years and years of emotion invested in the team.

now? it’s rare if i see the same people in any of those seats twice in a season. let alone all year long.
half of them aren’t even the one who paid for those seats, so it’s no big deal to them if they bolt early. an alarming amount of them don’t even really know much about football and can’t even follow the game.

In hindsight there were a lot of similarities between DiNardo and Orgeron, Joe Burrow and one magic season notwithstanding.

For the younger crowd who didn’t get a chance to see what could have been.

I was at the game and this is one of the games I think of most often, despite all the other heartbreakers I’ve seen since 1987, the start of my Tiger fandom.

The biggest question for me is, “Why not go for it on 4th and 2 late in the 4th Quarter? We had been tearing up that Auburn D-Line the entire gaMe, and you’re going to tell me we couldn’t pick up two yards and get the first? If we convert there, we could pick up another first down, then run out the clock. Instead, we punt the ball and Dameyune Craig crams it down our throat and we lose.

If we win this game, (and all the others we won), we go to Atlanta, even with the Ole Miss loss. We probably would have beaten Tennessee, too.

Dinardo was a good coach. His demise started when he replaced the departing Carl Reese with Lou tepper in 1998.
