That game epitomized Johnny Jones coaching and lack of fundamentals in all of his teams. We couldn’t manufacture good shots late, we couldn’t make free throws and we got absolutely demolished on the offensive glass down the stretch due to poor rebounding technique. When fans talk about rolling the ball out and playing backyard or playground ball Johnny Jones is who comes to mind first and foremost in LSU basketball.
“We did a tremendous job of doing a tremendous job.”

Good God we have Johnny Jones sympathizers still?
There are a few. A couple posted in this thread.
You’d think missing the postseason with Ben Simmons on your team and following that up with a 2 win league season would shut their asses up.
There’s a reason nobody hired the guy from UNT other than Joe Alleva after 14 years and why he’s at TSU now.
Never had to worry about good old Johnny being plucked away by a blue blood. Wonder why

The thing I remember is our former player Ralston Turner missing like 5 wide open threes during that rally or it wouldn't have been close at the end. It wasn't exactly like NC State played all that well we just didn't score.
We kept going to Mickey who had just come off an injury and he missed a lot of free throws.
NC State did beat the No. 1 seed the next game...Villanova I think?

It really wasn't. Ralston Turner was its second or third best player.
They had a number of ESPN100 players on their roster and the Martin twins who ended up transferring to Nevada and were the reason why Nevada was ranked so highly last year.

They apparently did a lot of things right to build a lead. Do you think they just suddenly stopped doing those fundamental things or did the shots just inexplicably miss and the NC State shots suddenly fall? This is why the automatic blame the coach is so stupid. Sometimes things like tht happen. They missed the same shots they were making which were open. Coaches will tell you that you cannot control what happens once the shot is released. The winning shot for NCS rolled around and bounced on the rim . If it rolls an inch further it might not drop into the net and we would not be having this commentary.

That game was frustrating. What a monumental 2nd half collapse by the Tigers.

While you are at least partially right... Some of the things not happening in the 2nd half were probably due to fatigue because JJ didn't have any sort of rotations in that game... like none

I thought the Jones era was just a big waste of time, but that loss wasn’t on him. “Couldn’t manufacture good shots?” LSU was getting layups at the rim and blowing them. I’m not sure how you get a better shot than a layup.
Mickey went ICE cold late and couldn’t make anything, Just ONE more basket or 1-2 more FT’s wins that game. I felt bad for Mickey. He’s at the line late and you could tell he had zero confidence. He looked shell shocked.
There is probably a lot you could blame on Jones in his 5 years at LSU. That loss wasn’t one of them

Because they were probably fatigued... LSU had 15 bench minutes total that game, the starters minutes?

That is literally insane.
Loss is not 100% on Jones, but his lack of rotation certainly played a part in blowing that game. You miss shots when you're tired

Who in the hell was he supposed to play? Bridgewater? Epps? Odo? Robinson? LSU had gone the entire season with essentially a 6 man rotation. The NC St. game wasn't an anomaly as far as the starters playing huge minutes. They had done that all season. Those final 10 minutes weren't a situation where they were coming up short on jumpers or just letting NC St. score at will. LSU scored FIVE points in the final 10 minutes and it STILL took a last second layup for NC St. to win the game. When you are fatigued it's usually jumpers and defense that falter. Yet LSU continued to defend (NC St. shot 34% in the final 10:00). It's what kept them in the game despite literally not being able to make a FG in the final 10 minutes. And LSU got numerous opportunities at the rim. If you're exhausted THAT'S the shot you want.

Sure you can. We lost 7 conference games that year and if not for a Hornsby buzzer beater, we'd have had a worse seed.
That team shouldn't have lost more than 5 sec games. That is on Jones. Having no rotation is squarely on Jones.
