Tragic. And what could have been for LSU Football.

Good on Stovall taking the job in the aftermath and doing his best.

The ultimate what could have been.

He was supposedly a great guy as well as coach.

Although we had brief success under Stovall and Arnsbarger this event started that beginning of the dark times of LSU football, that didn't really improve until Little Nicky arrived.

1980 was my freshman (and only) year at LSU. I would love for it to have been Rein but Stoval was not that bad. I lived in West Stadium, Gameday was very cool.

Agree, the ultimate "what might have been" at LSU. He was likely going to be our Bobby Bowden.

Just tragic for everybody involved.

1982 Orange
Awesome 3 year Arnspargar run
1987 finished #5 final AP poll

Those were 6 years of really good football teams (excluding 1983)

I wouldn't call this brief

Then Dinardo brought the magic back in 1995

SIX STRAIGHT LOSING SEASONS

Well, no shite-- the 1st two were Archer's last two years, but he had winning seasons with bowl appearances his 1st two years.

But the next four were the REIGN OF ERROR under Curley Hallman, the absolute worst coach in LSU history. No one is denying or disagreeing with that.

Then it was back to winning for the next three years under DiNardo.

It's not like the 20 years between Rein's death and Nick Saban coming here were totally worthless and "dark times" as another poster said..

I was 17 and my Dad woke me up the next morning for school with “Time to wake up. Bo Rein is dead.” I vividly remember thinking WTF.

Very likely. But would've also been interesting following '87 when Ohio State was looking for a coach. Particularly having played them in Tiger Stadium that year.

I've always wondered what might have been. I was not convinced at the time he was the savior. He coached four years at NC State and had a 27-18-1 record and best finish was third in the ACC in those 4 years.

He was a veer coach also which I was not very fond of. But I was hopeful and wanted him to do well.
