Based on fricking what?

I could see Schnidt leaving if Jay goes out and gets an experienced starter in the portal. It’s pretty clear he was always 3rd in the pecking order. Sheerin could already push Schmidt if he doesn’t leave for the draft. If a guaranteed starters comes in, he’s the most likely to lose his job.

But if this doesn’t happen, it seems unlikely he would leave.

Putting him in the Sunday role to start the season doesn't mean he was third in the pecking order. Of the three weekend starters, he was the one being asked make the biggest jump.

Cooper Moore going from the Big 12 to the SEC is the smallest jump, but he doesn't have the high end upside of either Evans or Schmidt. His demeanor and experience made him a natural Saturday guy as steadying influence.

Evans was being asked to jump from part time starter to Friday night guy, which is big, but he still had SEC and post season starts under his belt. His higher upside than Moore (and probably some recruiting promises) are what pushed him to the Friday night spot.

Schmidt was being asked to jump into the weekend rotation in the SEC after throwing only 3.2 SEC innings last year. There is no good way to ease someone into that, but putting them on Sunday is the best way to take as much pressure off of them as possible to give them room to breathe and develop.

I don't think that's true.

I could see Evans moving to the pen and perhaps even preferring that move.

Even with that, Schmidt is in no way at this point behind Moore. People are overrating Moore because he wasn't around. He wasn't overly affective in his short SEC stint either.

And, unless you are getting a bonafide stud, you'd be looking at someone who is at best in the same category as Schmidt.

To put it another way, it's a lot more likely that Schmidt is your Friday guy than it is that he's not in the starting lineup.

Fair enough, but I believe he would be first in line to lose his job. Evans has a lot more SEC experience and has flashed elite skills enough that I think that, if guys start asking questions based on portal moves, he’s going to get more of a guarantee than Schmidt would.

With Moore it will depend on his recovery, but like you said, he is stable and consistent and we lacked that this season, especially once he went down.

I think Schmidt has the upside to become better than Moore and challenge Evans, but he also has a lot of developing to do to get there. And he won’t have the luxury of waiting until the offseason for the staff to see how he looks then. He would have to enter the portal and then evaluate opportunities quickly because teams aren’t looking for starting pitchers all Summer.

We’ll see how it works out. I don’t want Schmidt to leave. I can just see it happening based on what portal moves Jay and Yeskie make.

I don’t think there’s a chance in hell Evans stays here if that’s the plan. Next year is his prime money year. He’s going to want to start. If he’s told he won’t, or even if there’s a chance that he won’t, then I think he will at the very least enter the portal and evaluate other options. If the staff brings in 2 established starters for an all-out battle; then 1 or 2 of this year’s starters are likely leaving to lock down a starting job elsewhere.

Schmidt is in the same boat. Unless 5 for 5 officially happens and they can retain some leverage after next year, both will be looking to start in their next draft showcase year.

He has the stuff, he just needs to be more consistent. Did he come along as fast as we had hoped? No. Is he a bust? Time will tell, but I think he and Evans will be a formidable 1-2 combo with another year of development.
