Regarding Jay’s late inning decisions

2 on, no out, bunting with Tre Morgan- In a vacuum, it’s a good call. But Tre is red hot and I think a lefty bunting against THAT lefty pitcher was going to be really tough. He had some wicked angles. Overall, didn’t agree.
1st and 3rd play- Honestly, no issue. You have Pearson up against that same lefty, really difficult AB. Tried to swipe 1 insurance run. Probably could have been executed better by Merrifield, but decision wise I thought it was fine.
We won anyway.

Agreed. I didn’t mind trying to steal a run there. Merrifield needs to get a much better jump.

I have to ask - do you actually think that was a called play from the LSU dugout to send Merrifield? Did Jay also call the pick off attempt from Wake that led to Merrifield’s decision to go.

Merrifield went on first pick move, which is exactly what he was told to do.

I think the call probably was to go home if the pitcher throws over, absolutely yes.
0.0% chance Jack Merrifield did that on his own or has the green light to make that call.

I think he had just had a lot of confidence in Tre to execute. His attempt was awful though. Given our recent bunting struggles I don’t want to do it at all, but I get that it should turn around.
Also agree with you on the first and third call. Execution wasn’t great, but no problem with the call.

This is a play we ran in high school and I have to assume it’s a similar call here. The runner on first takes a a slightly larger lead than usual to induce a pick off. The “play” is, if the pitcher throws to first, the runner on 3rd breaks for home

Something is wrong with the analytics.
In what scenario are we more likely to score with a runner on second with no outs.
1) letting tre morgan hit
2) making tre morgan bunt.

Tre messed that up. You call a bunt and expect that your players don’t bunt balls over their head. We were trying to build a little more of a lead and they had a lefty on the mound that wouldn’t cover 3rd base in time to get Tre out.

No, it isn't. Statistics say this is false.

I should have said “understandable call”. I am not a pro-bunt guy.

Yeah I don’t mind bunting in that spot but it feels a little crazy to have Tre Morgan bunt considering how hot he’s been.
That being said, I think it’s easy to let the outcome taint your opinion. It definitely looks a lot worse because he popped the bunt up.

I’ve come to the conclusion that not a single person in the lineup has ever hunted in their life.

It’s similar to asking a drop-back passing QB to run an option pitch play. They’ve probably practiced it occasionally and they know what to do in theory. But like an option read and/or pitch, bunting effectively takes a lot more practice than our guys are currently putting in on it.

I’d say it looks like our team hasn’t practiced bunting since middle school. Pop ups basically every time

His mistake was putting Merrifield at second instead of the faster Kling

If you’re a team that bunts sure you expect them to execute and you live with that
If you’re a “frick bunting” type team calling it there with your hottest hitter is just a bad decision. Again big Jay fan, but that was a horrid call

We kinda suck at Bunting, I would have let him swing but hindsight is always 20/20
