Last fall Gilbert went on a recruiting visit cycle to Bama, Clemson, UGA, and LSU. Being such a highly rated prospect out of Georgia I’m curious if anyone has ever heard him speak to why he chose LSU over UGA. Was he one of those kids who wanted to get away from home or just fell in love with the good guys or what? He might prove to be the biggest recruit in years next to Burrow and Stingley. Curious if anyone has any stories or insight.

Here, i googled for you

quote:

"Everybody thought I was going to Georgia, Alabama. In the interviews, I didn't really stray away from that. I just let them stay the course," Gilbert told Fox 5 Atlanta. "Meanwhile, behind the doors, I'm thinking in my head where I want to go. Talking to coach Brady, Coach O. I really made my decision a month ago. I just kept it on the low. Talking to Coach O, they just got coach Brady. I think it's the right fit for me to be honest. Feels awesome. Glad to be a Tiger."

at the time he didn't specifically address why he didn't choose UGA but he said he chose LSU because of Coach O, the offense, and the school ("even if I wasn't playing football I would want to go to LSU").

This was a case where the new offense made a huge difference.

I’m just glad we got him. I don’t know if I can remember seeing hype for an incoming freshman like this outside of LF7.

Derek Stingley Jr

My father in law, who has a brother that played in the NFL, vividly remembers when Derek’s grandfather was paralyzed. Talks about it all the time when we watch games together. He’s borderline obsessed with how fricking good of a player Derek is. Says he’s never seen a corner like him in all of his years watching the game.

Sting = highest rated CB in 247 history
Arik = highest rated TE in 247 history

Sting did have a ton of hype but I just feel like this has been on another level. Let’s hope for similar results for Gilbert’s freshman year

Stingley felt like an LSU lock for a while too so it wasn’t as hyped up as a recruiting win as an out of state kid like Gilbert. But both are equally as important for the program just as Burrow was the year before.

I think the difference is that fans have become accustomed to top rated DBs coming to LSU. GIlbert being the highest rated TE ever, an 800lb gorilla with a chainsaw for a dick offense and being able to swipe him under the radar from Saban added presumably more hype.
