allright, he's got a decent arm and superior running skills. he doesn't read defenses at a high level for the passing game - not much anticipation for receivers coming open and his accuracy is often off just enough to prevent more YACS.

in college you don't have to have a top notch passer to win a championship, IF the rest of the team is really good. Top 10 defense and special teams, great oline AND running game.

So let's concede the oline will be a really good one, and we have some backs who have shown some talent. so the running game should be much improved. defense is looking good, our DC is looking good - question will be depth over he length of the season. special teams? can't be worse, but will they be better?

and let's agree that daniels has shown the ability to bring the team down and score in the clutch.

so my assessment is that while daniels won't elevate the team as a really great passing qb, if the rest of the team is that good and daniels is able to improve SOME as a passer and the running game works, we could challenge for the west and the SEC championship. He could be a really good college QB under the circumstances. I do expect Nuss to compete hard for the position, and even if he doesnt win he job, he should show enough to be inserted if Daniels falters.

we'll know a lot about our season the first game, and then the fifth or sixth game.

Hope your analysis is right but even if Nuss shows improvement I’ve little hope BK will relieve JD simply if things are going bad. He didn’t do that this past season maybe because he felt there wasn’t better on the bench. I hope Nuss improves giving BK more sub latitude than he’s previously shown otherwise Nuss may be sitting on a lot of pine, if he stays.

This is the crux of the problem. And he's not learning it from Denbrock/Kelly either. So realistically, unless Maason Smith comes back 100%, Perkins steps up his game, and the incoming DB's play at a high level, I expect LSU to contend for the West but likely end up somewhere around 9-3. 10-2 if we beat FSU.

I figure its a 10-2 year.

We'll have two games we don't show up. Offense and defense should both be better.

You make some good points to be sure. I do not disagree It remains to be seen that JD can improve enough to win games himself. He has had 4 years to round into a top level QB, but I see no indication that he has learned much about the fundamentals of the game. This is central to all players but especially the QB which everyone understands is the most important position. He has to know what is happening everywhere on the field. JD clearly does not.

Has he ever checked out of a play successfully? I cannot recall a time he did. I think keeping him is a misstep, but Kelly is the one to make such calls. We as fans get to argue about them which is entertaining sometimes.

Honestly, JD reminds me of Danny Etling a bit. They both had average accuracy and arm strength, both are tough and good leaders, JD being obviously more athletic. Both had their moments and both could be frustrating as hell sometimes to watch. Neither will elevate a team but can win with good weapons around them

JD doesn’t have a good arm and he can’t throw a tight spiral - his passes often wobble and it’s not a very catchable ball - that’s why the WR’s had so many drops this year. If he could throw the ball better, read defenses better, throw with anticipation, and be more decisive and aggressive then he could be a serviceable QB.

I'm probably higher on Daniels than most of this board but I did notice that the miraculous escapability he showed early in the season was significantly diminished towards the end of the year. That's probably due to a combination of better game planning by defenses, the wear and tear of the season, and a conscious effort to be more patient in the pocket.

It comes down to his lack of understanding how the game is played. Hope BK is correct about year 5, but it cannot be based on anything one has seen in game.

He does enough to win games. WR play will only improve.

Lack of a dominant running back is killing us.

Reliable tight ends, that not only catch passes, but stay in and block, will only help JD. Having only Mason Taylor last year sucked for a young o line.

Well, if this is true it did not seem to improve his ability to pass.

Typical, “it’s everyone else’s fault” even though all those groups performed at a high level. Oline graded top 10 nationally, backs averaged 5.4 a carry (JD 4.8), WRs were running open all year, TE was outstanding when we could get him the ball and most of his yards were after the catch. The QBs efficiency ratings were lower than everyone else’s but because every play was called for him his volume of stats looked good. His yards per play and efficiency were dogshit.

Daniel’s will get hit a lot. As we saw last year. So we need Nuss to be ready anyway

This is spot on. JD was the entire offense because he couldn’t ever get anybody else involved

He was 18th nationally in QBR.
