Awesome dead on post. It is hard not to get caught up in all the hoopla and expect to be at the top of the heap every year. I for one, just want to win, not matter how we do it. I do realize that no team can stay at the top forever. but, I think LSU has enough talent on our team and in the state to be a top 5 team every year, and eventually the chips might fall our way.

great post, i think much of our fan base has become delusional to the point of notre dame and alabama, programs whose fans we used to make fun of for having the same unrealistic expectations.

sad really.

Great Post...I for one compliment you on articulating a realistic assessment of the program taking into account just about every pertinent factor to be considered.

Thanks!

BTW: Good luck to your son! I hope I'm around to see him running out the tunnel in Purple and Gold!

If you're making fun of Alabama now, you have issues. Alabama wants to win and they will do what they think they should do to have it happen.

16-0 in the SEC last 2 seasons.

LSU is 8-8.

UF broke through completely by hiring Spurrier. He wanted the LSU job. Joe Dean and accepting of mediocrity.

Thanks everyone... this crap has been on my mind since the Florida game. Nothing kills me more than to log on during/after a game and see some of the posts that litter this board. They're just so unbelievably unrealistic.

Someone above said they want LSU to be great, and they self admitted greed. I think we ALL want that. I'd give up unspeakable things to see 13-0 and #1 every year, but it ain't gonna happen. Patience will pay off. As they say, Rome wasn't built in a day. Neither was Gator football. Spurrier laid that ground work in the early 90's. Zook maintained it with some solid building, and Urban Meyer has laid some sick work to get UF to what it is today. Whether or not Miles is our Zook (ie short term, not the right guy) or if he continues to push us to that next level will only be told with time. Right now he's getting us too much talent to fire him. And he's not just getting the talent, but he's keeping us competitive. We win ALL the games we're supposed to. We're in the game, every game. Other than the UF and UGA games last year, we haven't been blown out once (OK, maybe the SEC title game in 05). At this point, that's realistic and what we need. We're not regressing at all. We have challenges and we adjust. I'll take that right now.

Now next year, I do expect a much more positive result on the field. Alabama will not be as good. UF will have a major adjustment year post-tebow (and I for one think Meyer is gone after this year with no Tebow and that ND gig opening again). Plus we'll have 3rd year JJ, a second year Sheppard, and a better line on both sides of the ball. Chavis in his second year will have a Defense that will be feared (like we're used to having). I think it goes without saying this hinges on a major upgrade at OC. Gary did us well, but it's time to move on. I fully expect SEC West title, SEC championship appearance, and BCS game.

bama's fans aren't the reason they are 16-0 the last two seasons.

Bingo -- we have a winner!!

Right on the money. These panty-waisted whiners, who think that SEC football should be like X-Box with a cheat code, don't live in the real world.

I lived in the stadium dorms in the early 80s. We had our moments and played some great ball, but were no where near where these teams have been in the last 9 years.

The ship is still sailing in the right direction, and I like it.

Texas, Ohio State, Michigan, Florida-If I read the lists correctly, none has more than 3 combined AP and BCS Natioanl Championships going back to 1935. Same as us. As for conference championships-winning the Big Ten has never been an indicator of NAtional success, as we've seen lately in BCS games, but also with their history of losing in the Rose Bowl to Pac-10 teams.

I don't get why some LSU fans are so modest because of things prior to the 2000s..

If you want to be realistic.. open your eyes and see that LSU has the amount of talent to be able to compete for national championships year in and year out now. LSU is a premiere college football program.

Don't sell yourself so short. Coaching makes a huge difference.

How many SEC Championships and national titles does Bama have to show for it? Or even big bowl wins?

Bama will again lose the championship game.. and follow that up by another sugar bowl loss.

They are competing for SEC championships. That's what LSU has lost. If you don't understand that, then so be it.

You mention Saban but temper it with "I don't think anyone would say he was of the elite tier of coaches he's considered to be in today" and it's wrong. Saban was already regarded as one of the real guys to keep an eye on. Saban took over a 4-7 and 2-8 program before DiNardo was fired and led LSU to an 8-4 season a bowl victory his first year and LSU's first SEC championship in 15 seasons his 2nd season. Let alone LSU's first NC in 45 seasons in his 4th season.

In 1999 Saban was, as you said, "a guy to keep an eye on." He was not, however, the elite, deified coaching God he is right now. We did for his reputation what he did for ours, and that is establish it as a player amongst the bog boys. He made Michigan State competitive - he even turned around the program you could argue - but he didn't have any huge home runs with them. He absolutely knocked it out of the park with us. You're right about his immediate success, and you hit the nail on the head with the confidence factor. He practically willed the teams in 2000 and 2001 to play above their talent levels - either that or DiNardo really was just an inept coach who couldn't capitalize on any of the talent he'd landed. I don't knock Saban one single bit. He started this - if we hadn't hired him, none of us would be having these arguments today because we'd still be mediocre, going to about 4-6 bowls a decade and making the occasional top 25 appearance. But he is gone, and it's up to us to continue it.... Which I think we're doing, given the road bumps. If we continue on this path, in 10 more years we'll be talking about the Tigers in the hunt for the NC year in and year out. 8-5 last year, 10-3 this year, maybe better next year... there will be some ups and some downs... And I can't wait to experience every single one of them.

Fair assessment. I think its pretty spot on. The only thing I'd say is that people are a bit more upset based on what they and the TAF pays to our coaches and for our program.

Every year ticket prices go up, concessions go up, and sometimes drastically. Then you have a head coach making $3.75M a year and his staff making over $2M/year giving around $6 M in just salaries going to our coaching staffs.

That said, I think people just expect our program to get return on that investment. It reminds me a lot of how people react to Reggie Bush on the Saints. If he wasn't the second highest paid offense player on the team, I doubt people are as critical of him. Same goes for the coaches.

I am proud of the team, and was proud of them last year. I was proud of our teams in 1998 and 1999 when I was there for every game, because I love the Tigers, love our players, and will always support them.

The heart and effort are what makes the LSU passion that is what we are known for as a team and a fanbase.
